Hollywood had serial killers as the heroes of Dexter and Hannibal.
And it will have a foul-mouthed clergyman taking on God as the hero of Preacher. It even has Satan as the hero in the new television series Lucifer.
But it’s never had a hero as shocking as the one I’ve just created.
His name is Adam White, and he’s a superhuman who fights evil. Even when it’s politically correct evil.
Adam White is the hero of all three stories. Or rather, he is the protagonist of the second two and figures in prominently to the first one. Here’s a little bit of what each story is about.
Mortal Gods: Ignition begins with the story “Like Hail and Fire, Mixed with Blood.” Raheel Aftab is living in the United States while clandestinely working for a foreign nation as an intelligence professional. His government helped execute a terrorist attack in the U.S. and even as the Americans have no idea who is behind it, the president has already announced that he will “not let this latest act of aggression draw” the U.S. into war.
Raheel thinks everything is going perfectly until a woman warns him that judgment day is coming, which sends him scurrying back to his own nation to warn his superiors. So what does the woman say to him? And is Raheel right in believing her or does he make a fool of himself?
“The First Transgender Superhuman”, the second story in the collection, starts with the president of the United States telling the American people that the immigration system is broken. Because “Congress has failed to act on it,” he must act alone by granting the invading aliens unconditional American citizenship.
And that becomes the final straw for the Caucus, a secretive group formed in opposition to him. They send the lovely Amanda Langli to tell Adam to go ahead with the plan.
So where does “The First Transgender Superhuman” fit into all of this? You’ll have to read it to find out.
And finally, “Warrior” tells the brutal tale of Adam fighting in a vicious conflict. A fanatical group called the Maghrebis have overthrown a nation and are wiping out its people. But some of the surviving natives have fought back and they enlist his aid. The tale follows Adam in a battle and lets the reader see all the horrors of a no-holds-barred war.
Finally, if you still don’t find Adam White to be a hero unlike anything Hollywood has ever produced, here is one more thing about him:
The stories at time hint that he just might be a Christian.
Murderers? Anti-God preachers? Satan himself? That’s par for the course for Hollywood heroes.
But a hero who fights politically correct evil? Hollywood wouldn’t dream of anyone as shocking as Adam White is in Mortal Gods: Ignition.
