Earlier this summer, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau disgraced our country by secretly paying $10.5 million to Omar Khadr, a convicted, confessed war criminal, terrorist and murderer.
What can you do when you have a terrorist walking your streets, and a terrorist-lover running your government?
You can rage about it. Or you can do something positive.
Well, we decided to do something positive:
We set up a crowdfunding website at SpeerKids.com, to raise money for the real victims — the family of the man Khadr murdered. His name is Sgt. Christopher Speer. And his widow is named Tabitha, and his two kids are named Taryn and Tanner.
We raised over $230,000 online, from 3,760 people, almost all of them from Canada.
It was Canadians’ way of saying, don’t judge us by our disgraceful prime minister.
We received the funds last week from the crowdfunding website Indiegogo.
Indiegogo took a few percent as a credit card and processing fee, but other than that, 100 per cent of the proceeds went to the family.
We also raised over $8,000 through cheques.
So I’m proud to announce that the two Speer kids received $109,764.84 Canadian each, deposited directly into accounts that their mom set up.
Transferring those funds, with the love and good wishes of 3,760 people, was one of the proudest moments of my public life.
I’ve spoken several times to Tabitha Speer. She doesn’t give media interviews, and we respect that. But I did ask her to share, even briefly, a message with me to pass on to those 3,760 people, and the many thousands of other Canadians.
Here’s what Tabitha Speer wrote to me today:
On behalf of myself and my children Taryn and Tanner, we would like to send a heartfelt thank you to all of the wonderful people who contributed to this campaign. Once again, we have been overwhelmingly amazed by such generous support provided by so many Canadians! It is truly a great feeling to know that there are caring and compassionate people in this world who have not forgotten the sacrifice my family has suffered. I am sure my husband Chris has been smiling from Heaven as he has witnessed these beautiful acts of kindness. God bless you!
Tabitha, Taryn and Tanner Speer
I wrote back to her and told her if she or her family ever need anything in the future, we’ve got her back.
So thank you to our donors and supporters.
You’ve done a beautiful thing, and helped restore the moral balance.
