(WATCH) Stossel: Plastic Straw Myths

Rebel Staff

This new video by Reason TV, featuring Kristen Tate, explodes the myths that plastic straws pose a serious environmental threat:

The claim that Americans use 500 million plastic straws daily is based on a nine-year-old's school project.

Politicians took notice. Seattle recently banned plastic straws, and other places are considering similar bans.

Plastic pollution in the ocean is a real problem, but only about one percent of it comes from the U.S. Of that one percent, only a tiny fraction comes from plastic straws.

How can that be? Celebrities tell us Americans use 500 million plastic straws every day.

The 500 million number is repeatedly used by the media. But it comes from a nine-year-old's school project. The real number is much less—closer to 175 million.

OK… Plastics pollution of the oceans is indeed a very legitimate concern and growing every day… But tell me how North American plastic straw users are dumping them into the oceans willy-nilly?… What? They are going down the toilet and flushing out to sea?… If I tried flushing a plastic straw in my toilet it would jam at the first bend… Something royally stinks about what is really going on and fixating on plastic straws ignores the real sources of how plastics are being dumped into the oceans… And which countries are the real culprits…
