Justin Trudeau is getting ready for his big trip to the White House So he thought he’d introduce himself to Americans by insulting them on 60 Minutes, one of the biggest news shows in the U.S.
He told them, in his best drama teacher voice, that they’re a bit stupid, at least compared to him:
"It might be nice if they paid a little more attention to the world... Having a little more of an awareness of what's going on in the rest of the world, I think is, is what many Canadians would hope for Americans”.
So the substitute drama teacher, former snowboarder bum, never had a real job till he was nearly 40, trust fund rich kid, is telling Americans they should be smart and worldly, like him.
For ten years under Stephen Harper, we had forgotten the stereotype of the smug little Canadian: Whatever America did, we did the opposite, just to show we weren’t American.
But Trudeau is reaching back to the bad old days, when Jean Chretien, the Liberal Prime Minister, implicitly blamed the United States for causing 9/11.
In the first congratulatory phone call from Barack Obama, Trudeau blurted out that he was quitting the NATO coalition against the Islamic State.
That’s really what Justin Trudeau means about an “awareness about going on” in the world. Following things on Twitter, uttering some impotent cliches, taking selfies — and letting the Americans and our NATO allies doing something about it.
What an embarrassment.
