It seems you just can’t crack a joke these days without some sensitive hothouse flower being mortally offended. Has the time come to implement a moratorium on humour and comedy?
Jerry Seinfeld confessed his dislike of campus gigs saying, “A lot of people tell me, ‘Don’t go near colleges. They’re so PC.’” Subjects that used to be the bailiwick of standup comedians are now off limits but political correctness hasn’t just won on campuses. The virus has spread throughout society.
Like when Academy Awards organizers apologized for what a group of Asian actors and filmmakers called the “tone-deaf” portrayal of Asians during this year’s ceremony.
They’re referring to Chris Rock’s apparently offensive and insensitive Asian joke which I’d think most Asians would find quite funny. Certain elite members of the community called it “tasteless” and undignified. Was it?
The gag portrayed school aged kids of Asian and Jewish descent as over-achievers working for a prestigious accounting firm. Is it now racist to offer praise to certain groups? And why no outrage from the Jewish community? This business of offensive comedy is complicated.
The Academy issued a grovelling apology any way in a statement that said:
“We are committed to doing our best to ensure that material in future shows [will] be more culturally sensitive.”
The best comedy always pushes the envelope and takes risks. But in this country, we’ve actually seen so-called “insensitive” comedians hauled in front of Human Rights Commissions. Now you can’t even joke about positive attributes without causing offence!
I’m calling for a five year moratorium on all forms of humour, comedy and satire!
Maybe the perpetually offended can use this time to grow a thicker skin.
