Acadia University prof battles for viewpoint diversity on campus (GUEST: Rick Mehta)

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Host | The Gunn Show

Have you ever wondered why more good professors don’t do what Jordan Peterson has done and just speak up?

Not many in academia are raising their voices against the conversion of Canada’s university campuses into left wing indoctrination factories filled with emotionally crippled students.

But there's a reason for that.

Professor Rick Mehta teaches first year psychology at Acadia University and he's done what amounts to the unthinkable in a university setting. He questioned PC culture.

For this, Mehta was scolded by the administration at Acadia and became the target of an online petition to have him removed from teaching.

Joining me to discuss the campaign of politically correct censorship against him and the degradation of free speech on Canadian university campuses is Professor Rick Mehta.

A petition demanding the firing of Acadia University psychology professor, Rick Mehta, is yet another example of political correctness running amok on campus. Amongst other things, Professor Mehta ran afoul of speech police by criticizing a psychology thesis (“coming to terms with … sexuality through interpretive dance”) and chiding Opposition Leader Andrew Sheer, who disrespected freedom of speech by expelling from caucus a senator who suggested that some First Nations children benefitted from residential schools.

First, Professor Mehta uses terms like “confirmation bias” and “narcissism” to describe the thesis and constructively suggests it might be improved if its author describes how the ideas expressed can benefit others who share the author’s experiences.

Second, nobody is denying that some First Nations children suffered abuse at some residential schools. But by the same token, a claim that others benefitted is highly plausible, given the number of schools and the thousands who attended them. Indeed, this claim is substantiated if we believe no less a luminary than writer and classical pianist, Tomson Highway (certainly not one to deny that others were abused at other schools !), who describes his time at a residential school as “some of the happiest years of my life”. Also, Professor Mehta quotes students who report “great experiences” at residential schools and he correctly points out that these institutions enabled many to escape the poverty of their reserves.

Of course, aggrieved parties must always be free to explain why a thesis is of high intellectual standard and why residential schools were bad. They are also free to critique Professor Mehta’s comments. They may write articles or letters to the editor , post You Tube videos, or whatever. But alas, all of this requires work and it is easier to demand that offending parties be fired and/or otherwise bullied, terrorized, humiliated, shunned or impugned.

Methinks it is time to give totalitarian political correctness short shrift and restore freedom of speech to its rightful place in a free and democratic society.

Thankfully my son is looking to go to university in Europe. I wouldn’t pay for the education he would get in Canada

ANDREW STEPHENSON commented 2018-01-24 22:38:09 -0500 It’s not “indoctrination” that higher education leads people to the Left. It’s that what modern Big C Conservative has to offer, is so ideologically inconsistent, that it’s hard to objectively support.

What could be more inconsistent than gender fluidity? What leads people to the left is wilful blindness.

The left is desperately seeking comforting lies.

Jonathan Bryant. As a fellow Atlantic Canadian I agree with what you said 100%.

I’m starting to think Lieberals are just like lemmings. One day they all just run head long over a cliff.

Well that can’t be soon enough, but, you may not be aware that lemmings jumping off cliffs is a myth. Back in the day Walt Disney Studios did a ‘documentary’ on lemmings. The only way Walt could get the lemmings to commit suicide was by a guy standing off camera with a flamethrower, forcing them off the studio cliff!
Aside from the left’s self destructive urges and actions, we need a big-assed flamethrower to push all the lefties off the cliff…so we can reclaim what is ours!

Sheila, thank you for interviewing Professor Mehta. Sounds like he will be subjected to a Star Chamber in the near future! He needs to surreptitiously record all meeting.
In post secondary education, thinking is becoming a revolutionary act! On second thought, this starts in kindergarten.

Mette Reed, yes, this is all very intentional!

Andrew Stephenson, poor logic equals poor post. Better luck next time!

What they’re doing is dumbing our kids down. This way they’re easier to control. The New World Order.
All this is intentional!

Re: Professor Rick Mehta

It is nice to see another Left of center prof wake up to the hypocrisy of the Left.

Andrew said, "It’s not “indoctrination” that higher education leads people to the Left. It’s that what modern Big C Conservative has to offer, is so ideologically inconsistent, that it’s hard to objectively support. "

Now there is a fine example of the pot calling the kettle black and a fine example of the “we all must think alike” hive mentality of the indoctrinated Left.

What you whimper as inconsistency in the “big C Conservative” camp is called having a difference of opinions. The Right knows that to be a good thing.

Few things make a cold shiver run down the spine of a conservative more than the group think alike that people like you, Andrew, desire.

Conservatives celebrate their individuality and personal independence.

@Andrea Stephenson…I am a graduate alumnus of Mount Saint Vincent University…I was the only male in the Seaton auditorium on Women’s Day in 1984….it was like being a Jewish stage hand at the Nuremberg rally.

If people saw it and heard it there is no way that they would:

(1) subsidize post secondary education with taxes
(2) permit the appointment of academics as policy advisors
(3) go in debt with student loans
(4) re-elect a metrosexual prime minister who keeps repeating he’s a feminist like some autistic child.

It starts well before university. No one now doubles in primary and high school. They start university without being able to read and write and obtain their diplomas while being unable to write a comprehensive memo. That’s the totally failed education system that the left has given us. Equality for all is the race for the bottom. The only thing they’re sure to understand is the non-stop victimhood claims of different class of people and the malevolent industrial complex. They can’t compete in the modern world, or they don’t want to make the effort, so they want to bring it down.

This Is The Liberal Agenda, Controlling What Is Taught To Our Youth!
Has Anyone Noticed This Has Really Taken Holt Since The Election Of Rachel Notley In Alberta And The Federal Election With Justin Trudeau At The Helm?
Justin Trudeau Is Not Sure What Gender Or Where He Stands. One Day He’s Wearing Pink Socks, A Pink Shirt And Marching In A Gay Pride Parade. Then You Will See Trudeau Dressed Up In Another Style And Praying In A Mosque, Where Women Are Segregated. Women Have No Rights Following The Quran And Living In Muslim Countries. Then Trudeau Will Say He’s All About Women’s Rights?
I Personally Think Trudeau Is Unfit To Be PM Of Canada. He Does Want Free Speech Taken From Us. There Is No Room For Criticism In The Liberal World Of Dictatorship.
Politics Should Stay Out Of School And University Classrooms.

The take away for me is that identity politics is undemocratic. One vote each right? Is democracy now the dragging down of society to the least emotionally mature, undereducated, abused, black sheep (not black in color but misunderstood) weakling? These poor students who can’t write a grammatically proper sentence after 12 years of education while dicking around on their cellphones and are unprepared for university. Me thinks cell phone dodgeball should become a thing. Whip dodgeballs at them while they are on their phones. They might cry human rights for a while, but we can say feel the democracy!

Liberalism is a mental disorder.
I’d like to ask Professor Mehta if he could recommend a good book or two on How To Think, and what he thinks about Dr. Lyle Rossiter’s book, “THE LIBERAL MIND: The Psychological Causes of Political Madness”.

Andrew. So Peterson created political correctness huh? Since you’re so scientific, please provide hard evidence.

Thank you Shelia for that great story from Atlantic Canada. As an Atlantic Canadian it bothers me when people from the rest of the country think we are all leftist nut jobs or cucks, that simply is not true as that interview has shown. It also offers me a bit of hope for my region of Canada that I love so very much.

Right on cue the leftard troll appears. “Andy” has become so very predictable that it is no longer amusing but rather boring and tiresome to say the least.

most professors teach in fields like STEM, or applied fields, where partisan bias doesn’t exist. Molecular biology isn’t something left wing or right wing, even if most professors teaching it tend to lean to the left personally.

Regardless of what Peterson is saying to get you to contribute to his gofundme this week, the simple fact is that this is a fabricated issue propagated by professional curmudgeons who, like Peterson, have a financial interest in stirring the pots, and the lack of “solution” is because it’s a problem that doesn’t exist.

It’s not “indoctrination” that higher education leads people to the Left. It’s that what modern Big C Conservative has to offer, is so ideologically inconsistent, that it’s hard to objectively support.

Control their minds and you will own their souls. Our Marxist controlled educational system, at all levels, has achieved it’s goal. One has only to listen and read what the left is talking about, to realize that we are on a course of self destruction, due mainly to our brain washed educational years. Unfortunately some of the brainwashed Left, like to call themselves Liberals. Fortunately some of us seem to have seen through this great scam, this is why programs, like The Rebel Media exist. Sadly, We are just a minority. It will soon be time to Lock and Load.

You have to love these campus “progressives”. They have such valid arguments that they have to exterminate anyone that dares question them. What we’re seeing is the far left is pushing so far to the extreme that they’ve started attacking moderate leftists as enemies of their hive mind. Is it really surprising that so many university students are barely literate? Schools have become little more than indoctrination centers. Students come out of high school unprepared for the real world, go to university & come out even less prepared. The good teachers get punished if they dare speak up, so few of them do.
