Alberta election: "Giant killer" Carrie Fischer and the battle for Highwood

Rebel Staff

One of the most interesting races of the Alberta election campaign? The riding of Highwood features the PC candidate who knocked off the former leader of the Wildrose party for the Tory nomination.

The giant killer is Carrie Fischer, who beat Smith handily but now faces a tougher fight ahead.

Fischer says, as far she's concerned, Smith's departure means the anger over the mass floor crossings from Wildrose to PC last December has largely faded.

"That's done with and over with the nomination and the results that came out and she's moved into a private life and people recognize that," said Fischer.

Her main opponent, Wayne Anderson of the Wildrose Party, says Smith is a non-issue in this campaign.

Anderson says this is about Albertans growing tired of the PCs after 44 years, and a recent budget that raises taxes and allows the debt to balloon.

Eileen McRae – I disagree. The Alberta PCs have become too arrogant to listen to what Albertans want. All they care about is what they want and what they think is best for us. They need a wake-up call. I’d settle for a PC minority to see if they can change their spots. If they can’t, then next time they’re OUT.

But Joan, I have a suspicion that those who are looking at the ndp are protesting the pc’s thus splitting those votes and leaving gains with the wildrose. I’d be happy with a wildrose minority government if it came to that that would have to force the pc’s to vote in favour of wildrose policies oooooh that would hurt.

Albertans may live to rue the day, if in a backlash against the Conservatives, they elect an inexperienced government.

I agree with Anderson and if I was in that riding would vote for him.

I took note of you saying that before Valerie. Good tactic. I would have done the same thing.

I voted for Fischer to give Smith a much-needed smack, but I’ll vote for Wayne Anderson in the election.

Ok, finally gotta say it:

Dear The Rebel,

You may have noticed that you have tons of content now, which is great, don’t get me wrong. However, it is not organized in any way, shape or form other than chronologically. Please, for the good of the audience, add Categories. You could really benefit from an Alberta Election right about now … I’m sure you are working on it, just had to vent…. Thanks for what you do.

(PS. My dream is that this site will look something like Breitbart.com in functionality one day, but I’ll take Categories to start…)

Maybe the ire of the floor-crossings has faded in her riding, but the ire against the Conservative incompetence has not…
