The NDP have been mucking up the Alberta education system. While the changes presented in a feel-good social media campaign might seem amazing, a closer look shows the government treating the public education system as a factory to turn out social justice warriors.
Watch as I give an example of how these actions will affect the future of our children as the NDP take them down what seems to be a very dangerous slippery slope.
The way things are going, kids aren’t going to be prepared for a future that involves jobs in science and tech.
The NDP are putting more focus on activism than they are on important subjects like computer science and math in what are called the STEM topics.
Math scores in the province have shown a downward trend. Even more telling is that the first discovery math program was instituted in Canada in 1995, and ever since then, the percentage of top math students in grade 4 has gone from 9 to 2.4% according to Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study stats.
Technology makes the world go round today, so consider these stats from the Information and Communications Technology Council’s Labour Market Outlook that projects that 182K jobs in information and communication tech will go unfilled at a time when Canadian youth face unemployment rates of around 13%.
That’s because the number of students graduating with math and science oriented degrees is low, and when kids aren’t exposed to STEM subjects early, there’s less interest as they grow older.
For his part, Minister David Eggen has stated that he realizes the math curriculum needs to be revamped, but at the same time he says he thinks that it’s a good idea for teachers to have flexibility in teaching methods.
Considering his secret curriculum team, can we really trust the NDP to make the changes needed for our kids to succeed?
Instead of setting kids up for success, the government is setting them up for failure because they stand to gain from it.
