In response to a series of grisly murders of secular bloggers and, most recently, a Hindu priest, the government of that officially secular nation has arrested thousands of suspects and accomplices.
While this news video is in the local language, all the suspects would appear to have something in common.
This video is also in the local language but is from June 10 and appears to be about a "monastery worker hacked to death" in Bangladesh.
Australian news site, SBS.COM has this article from what must be early on in the spate of arrests:
Bangladeshi police have arrested 37 suspected militants on the second day of a week-long clampdown launched after the recurrence of attacks by religious fanatics, officials say.
At least 1600 people were arrested after law enforcement agents began the crackdown on Islamist militants on Friday, police spokesman Kamrul Ahsan told reporters in Dhaka.
The initiative started following the murders of around 40 members of religious minorities, secular bloggers, gay rights activists and academics since early 2013.
Ahsan said 27 of the detainees are members of the Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh, an Islamist outfit banned in 2005 after carrying out attacks on public establishments and court buildings, killing at least 30 people.
“‘In general, people think they have done the right thing, that it’s not unjustifiable to kill’ the bloggers, gay people and other secularists, he added.” In the face of the popular support for these jihad murders, the government is capitulating: “As a result, even as the government has condemned the killings, it has urged writers not to criticize Islam and warned that advocating ‘unnatural sex’ is a criminal offense.” In other words, just stay quiet and you’ll be OK: give the jihadis what they want and maybe, just maybe, they won’t kill us.
Bangladesh police have arrested 3,155 people in 24 hours following a spate of gruesome murders.
The nationwide operation came as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina vowed to catch "each and every killer".
Religious minorities, secular thinkers and liberal activists have been the prime targets of the killings.
In recent days an elderly Hindu priest was found nearly decapitated in a rice field and a Christian grocer was hacked to death near a church.
DHAKA, Bangladesh — More than 3,000 people, some of them known Islamist militants, have been arrested in a series of police raids intended to quell a wave of deadly machete attacks against bloggers, minorities and others, the police said Saturday.
The roundup began last week after militants killed the wife of a police superintendent who had been investigating the machete attacks. Over the course of the week, the police said, they killed five militants in shootouts. They were members of the Jama’atul Mujahedeen Bangladesh, one of two groups that the authorities believe are behind most of the attacks, the police said.
Many of us in Western nations or even just non-Islamic ones believe that sharia is a choice, something we have to allow or will be put in front of a parliamentary vote as we saw in Ontario a few years back.
The Ontario Provincial Parliament voted against the implementation of sharia marriage courts. But I would wager that Ontario now has more sharia without a vote than would have taken place even had they voted "yes" in 2008.
Sharia happens when enough Muslims simply make it happen. And all you need for that is enough Muslims.
Here is a report from 2012 about an Ontario Islamic school teaching the most virulent antisemitism.
No vote required. And as antisemitism is a central dogma in Islam, we know it is taught in Islamic schools throughout the world.
The number of schools whose meals now all consists of sharia approved foods is growing fast. Much of this food is technically illegal as it contravenes the letter and spirit of the animal cruelty laws.
There is a substantive difference between a group of people electing to not eat a certain thing for any reason, and that group insisting that no one may eat that thing because having it near them is as bad as eating it.
Accepting that notion is the equivalent of accepting sharia law norms for ourselves.
And no one got a vote on that.
Not to mention the issue of mosques and "prayer rooms" that exist in many schools now, when only a few short years ago, religious events were forbidden at any public school.
Actually, they still are. Unless they are Islamic. Certainly in California:
And in Ontario schools, Christians were denied bible studies over lunch or recess, even though full mosque services take place in some schools complete with three-way gender segregation.
We already know that in Toronto at least, many polygamous couples not only live under those terms, but even have multiple wives accepting welfare benefits, which is illegal under Ontario law for non-Muslims. Ontario law forbids more than one welfare recipient at a given address.
So if Bangladesh arrests 3000 people responsible for these murders, how long can it stay a secular country?
And how long can Canada?
