A Yazidi woman who managed to escape ISIS shared her story at the Women in the World Summit last week. And her translator revealed some absolutely shocking details too.
As NYT reports, speaking at the summit, Shireen Ibrahim said, “They captured me when we were running to the mountains.” She and her family were taken as slaves by ISIS, forced to convert to Islam and witnessed the terrorists kill some of her friends.
In order to avoid being raped, she claimed to be married to her cousin. However, after two months their ruse was up and they were separated. “They did not believe me and they took him.”
She was sold and resold repeatedly. At one point, however, she was so sick that her owner let her go free. She now lives with some family members at a camp for Yazidi victims of ISIS.
Ibrahim's translator, Pirali, left Iraq in 2010. However, she shared her own horrific tale. One of her friends was unable to flee during an assault by ISIS because she was pregnant. ISIS sliced open her friend's stomach, and took out the fetus. Then “They raped the baby, and they raped her, and they thought she was dead so they left her behind.”
Pirali's friend managed to survive, but her baby didn't. And despite the madness, her will remains strong. “We are Yazidis and we’re not going to change our religion no matter what. My message is to save our people,” she told the summit.
