"Palestinian shot dead after Jerusalem attack kills two": That's how the BBC chose to headline its story about the fatal, unprovoked knife attack by a Muslim terrorist on an Israeli couple, their baby, and the man who rushed to their aid.
According to i24News.tv, "the head of Israel's Government Press Office [GPO] issued a stern warning to the BBC Saturday evening," while international social media lit up with ridicule and disgust aimed at the British Broadcasting Corporation's choice of words.
"There is a limit to the lack of objectivity in press coverage," GPO chief Nitzan Hen said in his statement, "and this time we are talking about an outrageous title, which reminds one of the headline given by the CNN TV station after the slaughter at the synagogue in Har Nof, which introduced the attack as 'an attack on an Israeli mosque,'" said Hen Saturday night.
"While the BBC corrected its title later this evening, tomorrow I intend to reprimand the head of their office in Israel and to warn him directly that we do not intend to let this pass unchallenged," he added.
Al Jazeera English, meanwhile, was also widely criticized for its tweet about the same crime:
"Palestinian shot dead after fatal stabbing in Jerusalem; 2 Israeli victims also killed"
The news outlet later apologized, explaining that the tweet had been "written under the pressure of breaking news."
Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Peter Lerner tweeted, "As I said yesterday Al Jazeera outjazeerad itself. Now they apologize."
