Housing activists and local citizens associations were squatting at a mid-rise building in Burnaby since Saturday until a court order enforced by the RCMP came down telling them to leave.
As of Friday morning no arrests had been made and the squatters were still there.
Yesterday, a group led by Ivan Drury, the Alliance Against Displacement held a press-conference, which I attended.
Local residents are upset that much of the older rental housing in these mid-rises around Burnaby’s Metrotown are being lost and replaced with newer high density buildings but here again we see a protest for regular middle-class and working poor people, hijacked by radical activists who want to see 100% social housing built and paid for by the taxpayer.
Watch as I give you some background on Ivan Drury and show why nothing short of massive taxpayer funded social housing from government will satisfy the radical activists.
This issue isn’t black and white. It’s not as simple as “gentrification is good” and “housing activism is bad”.
We do need to be careful about how much housing we tear down in favour of new high-end condo’s that may inevitably get snapped up and held onto as investment properties for the many thousands of millionaire immigrants we’ve invited into our province over the past ten years but we also need to cast a cynical eye on activists like Ivan Drury.
