Olympic bid: Can Calgary afford multi-billion dollar party for IOC aristocrats? (Guest: William McBeath, Save Calgary)

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Host | The Gunn Show

Another city has dropped out of the process to host the 2026 Winter Olympics. With Sapporo, Japan ending their bid, that leaves four cities competing to win the games - Stockholm, Sweden; Calgary, Canada; a three-way Italian bid from Turin, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo; and Erzurum, Turkey.

The prospect of Calgary becoming a two time Olympic host city is getting closer to becoming reality and that has me worried. It should worry you too.

The latest lowball cost estimates peg the tab for hosting the two week long party for the world at $5.2B - up a full billion from early April estimates.

In the wake of a cancelled pipeline that killed 8000 jobs, where is all this money supposed to come from?

And that whopping bill doesn’t include all the IOC demands, perks, and bribes. Part of winning an Olympic bid is a willingness to bend to every expensive whim and demand ordered by the aristocrats who sit on the International Olympic Committee.

Taxpayers need to know what Calgary’s Mayor Nenshi is willing to give to the corruptocrats just to stay in the bid process well in advance of the November 13 2018 municipal plebiscite on the Olympics.

Fortunately, Calgary taxpayers have a watchdog group demanding a transparent Olympic bid process.

Joining me tonight to cut through all the municipal spin and break down the Olympic costs is William McBeath of Save Calgary.

The 1988 Winter Olympics that Calgary hosted put the city into massive debt. And yet winter Olympics are usually cheaper to host.

The biggest single largest over budget cost was the Saddle Dome, not that there weren’t plenty move over budget costs to add to the bill.

The Saddle Dome was initially sold to Calgarians as a venue for the 1988 Olympics, but then the cost was later justified by claiming it was also built to replace the Stampede Corral as home of the Calgary Flames.

The promised economic return on the investment did not even come close to what was sold to Calgarians.

This is the same song and dance the happens for every city that has ever hosted the Olympics.

It is all a scam.

This was really a 5 minute story and a 5 minute decision to say no.
No one seems to know how the crazy spender Nenchi got re-elected?

As I’ve said before – just keep your eyes on the bottom line where they try to slip in a tribute statue to “Stout Nenshi” as part of the bid….

THE 1976 MONTREAL OLYMPICS WERE JUST PAID OFF 2 YEARS AGO.
HAS CALGARY PAID OFF IT’S SHARE OF THEIR LAST OLYMPICS?
THE TRUEDOPE LIBERALS HAVE DROVE US INTO DEBT WE DON’T HAVE ANY MONEY TO SPARE FOR AN OLYMPICS

Why is it a plebiscite for only Calgarians when every taxpayer in the country will be “saddled” with the astronomical costs of such a venture.
And yes. The entire Olympic Committee is just an elitist bunch of socialites who live the high life at our expense.
Personally I think they should just pick two sites ,one winter and one summer and have the games there in perpetuity.

If they’re saying $5.2 billion you can bet on it being at least $10 billion minimum. The IOC has a history of deciding who will host before they start their corruption/selection tour. Selling it on “affordable housing” is a load of crap. Athens should have been a warning to all cities that had Olympic dreams since.

Yup it’s just another elitist scam to fleece the taxpayer. You can be sure it will be double or more than what they say it is, and it’s already not worth it, and the taxpayers will be forced to pay for it, even if they have to lose their homes to pay for it through their already ever in creasing property taxes. The affordable housing scams is well established as a massive taxpayer theft. If they’d stop their stealing and driving up the cost of homes, people would be able to afford them.
