Another city has dropped out of the process to host the 2026 Winter Olympics. With Sapporo, Japan ending their bid, that leaves four cities competing to win the games - Stockholm, Sweden; Calgary, Canada; a three-way Italian bid from Turin, Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo; and Erzurum, Turkey.
The prospect of Calgary becoming a two time Olympic host city is getting closer to becoming reality and that has me worried. It should worry you too.
The latest lowball cost estimates peg the tab for hosting the two week long party for the world at $5.2B - up a full billion from early April estimates.
In the wake of a cancelled pipeline that killed 8000 jobs, where is all this money supposed to come from?
And that whopping bill doesn’t include all the IOC demands, perks, and bribes. Part of winning an Olympic bid is a willingness to bend to every expensive whim and demand ordered by the aristocrats who sit on the International Olympic Committee.
Taxpayers need to know what Calgary’s Mayor Nenshi is willing to give to the corruptocrats just to stay in the bid process well in advance of the November 13 2018 municipal plebiscite on the Olympics.
Fortunately, Calgary taxpayers have a watchdog group demanding a transparent Olympic bid process.
Joining me tonight to cut through all the municipal spin and break down the Olympic costs is William McBeath of Save Calgary.
