Donald Trump's long-awaited securing of the nomination didn't just spell Judgement Day for the Republican Party.
It heralded the colliding of two worlds -- politics and reality TV -- which admittedly have never been all that far apart, but have always maintained some sort of distance, which is just how the wonks and empty suits and the rest of the unattractive people wanted it.
But so long as there was a sleazy, unprincipled side of politics, the lurid spectacle of trash television was going to be pulled towards it like a magnet.
When that unholy marriage finally became official, an ideological divorce occurred amongst America's right wing. The principled conservatives claim they are gone from the GOP, never to return. We shall see if they mean it.
Meanwhile in Canada, our opinion leaders are typically smug about all this. It'll never happen here, they say as they gleefully fill out their censuses and brag about lending a hand in Fort McMurray while judging the residents for having offended the higher power of Mother Nature.
Then these twits flip over to the CBC and are confronted with the sight of our public broadcasters drooling over our Prime Minister Honey Tru-Tru's smokin' hotness as though they were some common supermarket tabloid.
Need I remind you, this is the same CBC that regularly disdains ratings-friendly programming out of some misguided sense of honour and devotion to quality Canadiana.
Now, since the CPC has been lamely "Keeping Up With The Trudashians" for the past six months, they'll eventually get there too.
Heck, they may already be there. If Lord Volearymort doesn't jump into the race, some Tory Insider Speaking On Condition of Anonymity may be floating Ben Mulroney or Catherine Clark's name as a possible candidate again to the press as we speak.
One possible CPC leadership candidate -- Tony Clement -- was willing to speak against Canadian politics embracing the TMZ ethos on Ezra's show last week. It may be the boldest stance of this leadership campaign yet.
But one thing is for certain. We are not and have never been immune to the effects of the political dumpster fire currently taking place stateside, so please take some time and remind your lefty friends to stop pretending that they are.
