Carleton University in Ottawa has decided to remove the scale from its gym because a student complained about being triggered. We're not making this up.
A sign where the scale once stood claimed the decision was “in keeping with current fitness and social trends.”
Bruce Marshall, manager of health and wellness at Athletics said he doesn't believe focusing on weight is a positive thing. “We don’t believe being fixated on weight has any positive affect on your health and well-being.”
The offended student, freshman Samar El-Faki, explained via Facebook that “scales are very triggering”. Yes, those exact words were used.
“I think people are being insensitive because they simply don’t understand. They think eating disorders are a choice when they are actually a serious illness,” she explained.
Not everyone at the school agrees. Marko Miljusevic, a second-year computer science student, wrote, “We shouldn’t remove something because some people abuse it,” he said.
“If they can’t handle the number that shows up on the scale then don’t step on it,” he added.
SOUND OFF in the comments: do you think the scale should have been removed?
