Remember when Canada embarrassing environment minister congratulated Syria for signing on to the Paris agreement?
Catherine McKenna's official Environment Canada Twitter account tweeted:
Canada salutes Nicaragua and Syria for joining on to the Paris agreement. #GlobalClimateAction. #Cop23.
It was embarrassing and vile. Civilians are being bombed, gassed and disappeared by the Syrian government. But they're making a commitment to take the bus more often so they're getting kudos from a former human rights lawyer like Catherine McKenna.
To explain how Canada could send well wishes to a dictator, McKenna actually blamed her own staff, instead of taking responsibility herself.
But I don't think that was the whole story. I wanted to fact check Catherine McKenna the way the mainstream media would do for a conservative.
So we filed an access to information request with her Ministry.
We asked the government to provide copies of all documents including emails, text or instant messages, media lines, memos, approvals, calendars etc for the proposal, drafting, approval issuing and deletion of the tweet on Syria signing the Paris Accord on November 7th, 2017.
Pretty straightforward right? Should be easy. I mean it's just one tweet.
Apparently, it's not that easy. Normally the government has to provide this information to us within a 30-day time limit. But we just got a letter asking for a 150-day extension.
That brings the total time period up to 180 days - 6 months!- to get me information on one stupid tweet? Insane.
Sounds like they want me to quit looking which is only going to encourage me to keep digging.
But this is just another example of how shady and secretive the Liberal government is.
They cause us international embarrassment and they won't even allow us to find out how it happened for at least half a year.
