The Edmonton Eskimos are a game away from competing in the Grey Cup so of course, social justice warriors are turning their sightss on the team’s nickname.
Apparently, Eskimo is an offensive term for those of Inuit heritage.
Even Winnipeg mayor Brian Bowman weighed in last week, saying Edmonton has an opportunity for “a more inclusive” nickname for its football club.
The Mayor should tread carefully when it comes to the minefield that is sports team nicknames in the 21st century:
Today they’re coming for the Eskimos, tomorrow it might be Winnipeg’s Blue Bombers...
We know from a poll taken by the Washington Post in 2016 in which 504 natives were asked if they were offended by the term “Redskins,” 90 per cent said they weren’t.
When it comes to native nicknames and logos, taking offence seems to be the bailiwick of official native spokespeople and the perpetually offended, not the average person.
