CFL finals kick off debate over “offensive” Edmonton Eskimos nickname

David MenziesMission Specialist

The Edmonton Eskimos are a game away from competing in the Grey Cup so of course, social justice warriors are turning their sightss on the team’s nickname.

Apparently, Eskimo is an offensive term for those of Inuit heritage.

Even Winnipeg mayor Brian Bowman weighed in last week, saying Edmonton has an opportunity for “a more inclusive” nickname for its football club.

The Mayor should tread carefully when it comes to the minefield that is sports team nicknames in the 21st century:

Today they’re coming for the Eskimos, tomorrow it might be Winnipeg’s Blue Bombers...

We know from a poll taken by the Washington Post in 2016 in which 504 natives were asked if they were offended by the term “Redskins,” 90 per cent said they weren’t.

When it comes to native nicknames and logos, taking offence seems to be the bailiwick of official native spokespeople and the perpetually offended, not the average person.

I have a problem with the Blue Bombers (violent), BC Lions (animal appropriation), Calgary Stampeders (implied animal abuse). TO Argonauts (still trying to find something offensive there, I’m sure I will )… I say go with numbered teams and problem resolved.

I call them the Eskihomos.
But in a good way.

Hey! Just take a step back for a second. Naming a sports team after an ethnic or cultural group, when none of the players, owners, or coaches belong to that group is just bizarre. I think Punjabi people are great (being descended from that group) but would find it weird if the next CFL team was the Mississauga Punjabis. I, myself, am a bit annoyed at the token respect paid to aboriginal cultures with team names, etc. when no consideration seems to be paid to the real issues affecting these people. You should read the report (and first-hand statements from “Redskins”) of the Residential Schools Truth and Reconciliation Commission. It really changed my view of the issue. Also, I agree with Sam Hill’s point.

It saddens me that every time some academic snowflake or ‘person of colour’ makes a statement that is utterly stupid , it is taken seriously by certain members of the media.
In this case , the name Eskimo was not conjured up by European settlers or any other white person. It is what the Inuit of Alaska call themselves and called themselves that from millenia. It spread into Canada’s side of the North as a result of early exploration by Europeans .
It is incredibly saddening to realize how stupid people really are yet some of them ( read Trudeau) have positions of influence while others in academic surroundings like to think they are smart yet have an uninformed opinion that is equally stupid.
In the future I think there should never be another instance of naming a sports team after anything connected with natives. It was originally done to try and be inclusive and honour them but all it’s done is prove time and time again that all good deeds must be punished.

After the boning the Eskimos get when they play in Calgary, they should call them the Edmonton pillow-biters

The Riders lost that’s all that master. I’m heading into the black pit.

Why don’t the teams push back on this nonsense? Every time they give in it just feeds the monster. Is this all just an exercise to normalize subjugation, so when Islam does it’s final sharia push,we will be so used to giving in, we won’t know what hit us? Prep for the loss of more and more of our freedoms. Get used to it. Post modernists are re writing everything, and paving the way for those who would never let a good crisis go to waste. The biggest actors: the Islamic global alliance.

Stephen E., funny.

I can guarantee you that those leading this outrage charge are white leftists. Never cave into SJWs. Their demands will never end.

Just change our left wing NDP/liberal excuse for a mayor.

Never in my life have I seen so much “stupid” coming from the limp wristed snowflakes.

For how many years this wasn’t a problem?

Like a wise man said a couple of years ago. `You can`t fix stupid`.

The whole world’s going crazy!

Ya, well the mayor’s a fine one to talk. Is the " Banjo Bowl" not offensive to Burt Reynolds?
commented 2017-11-18 22:20:59 -0500
I find the mayor of Windypeg offensive ! He should be replaced .

Funny how socialists think they speak for people they wouldn’t know if they fell over them. People of no virtue, virtue signalling they do, is a form of insanity a trait of all liberal hypocrites! Go Eskimos. Oh dear mayor of Winnipeg, Bombers May be offensive considering all the new citizens you support running across your border!
commented 2017-11-18 17:42:56 -0500
It’s not the “Eskimos” part of their name I fine so offensive. It’s the “Edmonton” part.
commented 2017-11-18 16:12:51 -0500
Sam Hill same thing happened here in Edmonton, the city paid most of the bill for the new arena and let the Oilers owner have dibs on the surrounding land to build high rise condos which are worth more because of the taxpayer funded arena.
commented 2017-11-18 15:27:52 -0500
I’ll tell you what offends me. It’s the government giving hard earned tax money to professional sports teams. Look at the Ottawa Senators, they received all kinds of tax concessions, and still their arena can’t sell out.
commented 2017-11-18 14:20:12 -0500
Nothing surprising here. It’s the world we live in. In fact, I would have been surprised if the snowflakes hadn’t taken offence. This isn’t news anymore.
commented 2017-11-18 12:43:36 -0500
I have read many comments from Inuits expressing a sense of pride with the name.

blue bombers…originally a bomber was a nickname for a blaster in the mines in Manitoba…blue…the cold weather in Winterpeg…hence Blue Bombers…nothing to do with the so called military industrial complex…most cree and inuit i’ve talked to tell me these sjw’s need to get a life…go Riders!

Roughriders – sounds too sexual.

Bombers – not PC and may offend terrorists.

Allouettes – birders may find that offensive.

Lions – sounds too scary.

Stampeeders – sounds too criminal and too violent.

RedBlacks – not inclusive enough: whites and orientals excluded.

Tiger-Cats – again, scary animal.

Argo – comes from Argonauts: too Greek, too violent, too militaristic. Besides, to many anything Toronto is offensive.

… Generations ago, the Left’s protests were about significant and important issues. Now their “issues” are desperately scraping the barrel for something to complain about.
… The Left has become a joke.

The Eskimos should be disavowed and disbanded.
Their existance should be strickened from the history books.
