Vision Vancouver councillor Kerry Jang must apologize immediately and resign after raising the flag of communist China at City Hall last week. That was the message from Chinese Canadians yesterday led by Meena Wong and members of the Taiwanese community.
Last week, Jang attended a flag-raising ceremony where the Chinese flag flew outside city hall, while wearing the communist party’s red scarf. This didn’t sit well with many in our Chinese-Canadian community, especially those such as Meena Wong’s family who faced harsh persecution during the cultural revolution.
Wong was joined by Louis Huang from the Alliance of the Guard of Canadian Values. His group is made up mostly of Chinese-Canadians who are fearful that Canadian values are being shoved aside in favour of closer and cozier relations with the government of China.
A petition shared by Meena Wong and started by Louis Huang and his group with over 1,500 signatures was then hand delivered to the Mayor's office. Of course neither Gregor Robertson nor any official from Vision Vancouver was anywhere to be found but the official submission will force the Mayor to at least respond to it.
It was clear at the protest Canadians of different backgrounds want Kerry Jang to resign.
It’s sad that Canada doesn’t have official relations with Taiwan, but we can thank Pierre Trudeau and his closeness with Mao Zedong for that. In 1970, Trudeau and the Liberals ended official relations with Taiwan instead opting to recognize communist China, a black eye in Canadian history.
As for Kerry Jang? Well he has been elusive and fairly quiet all week since his claims of racism after the controversy originally emerged. He even ducked out the back of council chambers on Tuesday morning when I was at City Hall, despite my requests for an interview.
But I don’t think Jang will resign. This isn’t the first controversial matter he’s gotten into – remember earlier this year when he wanted city hall to force a real estate developer to terminate their agreement with the Trump Organization for their new Trump Hotel and condo tower? Even Mayor Robertson joined him in this call.
Vision Vancouver have fully cemented themselves in the regressive column.
When true progressives like Meena Wong and conservatives like myself and Jason Kenney share the same anger towards the decision to raise the flag and wear communist scarves, it’s clear this is an issue that engenders contempt from across the political spectrum and across our diverse city.
