Imagine a murderer, rapist, or child predator getting off scot free because their case didn’t get to trial quickly enough. That’s happening in Canada and in Alberta, where the court system is a mess.
We’ve heard reports of judge and prosecutor shortages causing delays in getting cases to trial for years, but the Liberal government hasn’t done a thing to get new judges appointed to fill vacant positions.
Alberta Justice confirmed that of the sixteen appointments made over the last two years to the Court of Queen’s Bench, fifteen simply filled vacancies due to retirement or to replace judges who had been elevated to other positions.
There are still fourteen vacancies on the Court of Queen’s Bench and two on the Court of Appeal.
The Notley NDP promised $14.5 million to the justice system and hired 50 Crown prosecutors, and 30 new court staff, but the Jordan decision passed by the Supreme Court last year is just aggravating the situation.
Watch as I explain why this ruling is letting some lawyers get serious cases dropped simply because the court ran out of time.
To give credit where due, the NDP are at least attempting to do something about the problem, but the Feds are doing almost nothing.
They’re delaying justice for victims of crime by ignoring their duties in filling important roles.
