BOMB disposal officers have detonated a suspicious package near the finish line of the Rio Olympics men’s road race.
The loud blast was heard for several street over after bomb squad experts blew up a package which had been spotted close to the spot where Britain's Chris Froome could soon take the gold medal.
According to reports in Brazil, officers swooped on the unattended package just yards from the finish line.
Lebanese athletes refused to share a bus with the Israel team to get to Friday's Rio Olympic Games opening ceremony, members of both teams said.
Lebanon and Israel are officially at war and have no diplomatic relations.
The incident happened as the Lebanon team sat on the bus waiting to head to the Maracana stadium, before demanding the Israeli athletes must not board.
Israel's athletes insisted on doing so, but the two teams were eventually taken to the ceremony in different buses.
Egyptian members of the Muslim Brotherhood may be able to seek asylum in the UK, according to new guidance from British immigration authorities.
But the move could anger London’s allies in the Middle East – including Egypt and Saudi Arabia - which have declared the Brotherhood a “terrorist” organisation.
The Home Office guidance, entitled “Country Information and Guidance Egypt: Muslim Brotherhood”, states that high profile or politically active members, especially those attending protests “may be able to show that they are at risk of persecution, including of being held in detention, where they may be at risk of ill-treatment, trial also without due process and disproportionate punishment."
“There is an investigation underway focused on whether representatives of ISIL have crucial roles in controlling and managing migrant flows to Italy,” Justice Minister Andrea Orlando told a parliamentary hearing on immigration, Reuters reported.
Fatima Aberkan, dubbed the ‘Belgian muse of ISIS’, who was jailed to 15 years on terrorism charges, has been released due to a bureaucratic mess, while her only restrictions are she is not allowed to visit the Molenbeek district or view jihadi websites.
Aberkan, 55, also known within the Belgian media as the “Mother of jihad”, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on terrorism charges in April.
