Dear Donald Sutherland: "Go to hell, you typical weaselly champagne socialist"

Brian LilleyArchive

Hollywood movie star Donald Sutherland just wrote an op-ed in the Globe & Mail, saying that as a Canadian who lives and works in the US, he should still have the right to vote in this fall's federal election.

But Sutherland hasn't lived in Canada since 1957.

What riding would he even vote in?

And of course he falsely blames Stephen Harper for this situation.

Thomas Mulcair wants to be PM, but he holds dual citizenship.

Yeah Bro, telling it like it is Brian! Next time, don’t go quite so easy.

Only those who live in, and contribute to this country whilst living here should be able to vote. It’s called committment to one’s nation.

I agree that Sutherland should not be allowed to vote in Canada if he’s not a citizen anymore. Lot’s of celebrities have left Canada for the US and live there. Aren’t they all US citizens now? We don’t need them with their Hollywood status in Canada trying to sway voters.

I want to know why he has not complained before now. This was legislated in 1993 and challenged in the courts in 2014 and appealed. The appeal overturned the court and the law was returned to its original stance. You cannot vote in a federal election if you have been absent from Canada for 5 years. I understand he has a summer home in Quebec but is not registered as a primary residence. Expats do not pay income tax in Canada and this law is very normal in the Commonwealth Countries. You said it Brian—champagne socialist.

If Donald Sutherland actually does own property in Canada, he can vote. I actually went to elections Canada web site and checked it out. Now for people that live outside of Canada and do not have any home ownership in Canada, no you should not be able to vote. But guess what, as soon as you return you will be able to do so again. The only people whom are whining are people that would never vote for the current government anyway and are just complaining because they do not like Harper.

If you were born here – you should be forever able to vote here – it shouldn’t matter if you make your living elsewhere as long as you retain your citizenship.

Is this a case of an old hack wannabe actor, looking for his 15 minutes? I totally agree with Brian, go to hell, Sutherland and take the weaselly hypocrite Neil Young with you.
