This kind of thing happens every time one of these backlashes happens, and whenever I try to get him to see the other side of these things, it doesn’t usually go very well. Let’s see if this time will be any different.
Jesse and his pals seem to think Canada was this beacon of tolerance before Stephen Harper brought in an Australian pollster who waved a magic wand and whipped up a completely false and misleading anti-niqab hysteria that didn’t exist before and destroyed everything.
Here’s a question Jesse should ponder: How many backlashes against immigrants do we have to have before we take a good hard look at the “Canada is a welcoming country” meme and decide whether that’s just a bunch of feel-good nonsense?
Pale-skinned progressives can talk about Japanese internment camps or residential schools, the Komagata Maru or the antipathy towards “Eye-talians” in Orange Ontario all they want, but somehow these things don’t figure within their vision of Canada.
It’s especially weird because their of-colour friends never stop pointing out exactly how racist Canada is, and yet when something like the niqab debate happens they act as though it’s never happened before.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again while expecting a different result. Hand-wringing about evil Conservative dog-whistle campaigns may be great for electing progressives, and if that’s what you’re trying to achieve instead of actually stopping racism, well, good on ya, but I was under the impression that left-wingers were mad about racism because they wanted it to end.
And hey -- getting rid of racism would keep Conservatives out of office forever, wouldn’t it? I guess it would have to, seeing as how the only people who apparently vote for the party are a bunch of weird old racist uncles at the Thanksgiving dinner table. Eliminate that and what have the CPC got left? More to the point, what would the progressives have left to talk about?
Well, they would have guys like me who aren’t “old stock Canadians” but still lean right, which usually makes progressives say something like, “Josh, don’t you know that at one point you would have been targeted because of your religion?”
As it happens, I actually have been called a “stupid greedy Jew” in a university newspaper back in 2003 by a bunch of white kids who considered themselves to be progressives. When it happened, the Official Jews stepped in to administer collective punishment, pulled all copies of the newspaper, and then went to the donors to tell them what a great job they were doing “fighting anti-Semitism on campus” and wouldn’t the donors please give them more money.
There’s no doubt in my mind that if the kids editing that newspaper didn’t have a negative opinion of Jews before, they sure did after the fact. But who cares what I think? My job was to lie down on the floor and cry about being “othered” and how it was a “hate crime” and how I could never again see Canada as a welcoming country. I didn’t do that, but lots of other young Jews have been conditioned to, so it’s their stories that get told because that’s what brings in the donations.
The fact is, if new and old Canadians got along despite their differences and learned to accommodate to one another, community leaders, journalists, and progressive politicians might outlive their usefulness…
