During the Ontario PC leadership race, Ford was the champion of grassroots conservative who wanted to take back control of the party. His main opponents, Caroline Mulroney and Christine Elliott, represented establishment elites.
Since winning the leadership, Ford's hired staff from the losing Mulroney and Elliott campaigns to work on his provincial election campaign. These are people who did not support Ford's policies and quite recently wanted to prevent him from becoming Premier.
Ford also dumped Tanya Granic Allen as the party's candidate in Mississauga-Centre after a video from 2014 showed her voicing opinions on gay marriage that we already knew she had. Tanya's supporters also backed Ford in the leadership race, it's doubtful he would've won without her.
