Economist: "The cost of energy would have to go up" under Ontario's cap and trade scheme

Marissa SemkiwArchive

Ross McKitrick, a professor of economics at the University of Guelph, explains -- in layman's terms -- the implications of Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne's just announced cap and trade scheme.

He compared it to the Milk Marketing Board, through which the government manages the dairy industry through a system of quotas.

"It's just another name for a cartel system," he says.

McKitrick adds that the government is "being very deceptive when it talks about pollution, because we already have extensive regulation against pollution in Ontario" and have for decades.

Final nail, final straw, bags are being packed. Time to execute “Plan B”.

Wynneee is going to save the planet? How about she start small and save the province of Ontario. Save us from her and cabal of liars, cheats and thugs. The Liberal party of Ontario has lost the moral authority to be the Government of this once proud and productive jurisdiction. Instead of doing what government what was designed to do they have instead chosen the path of creating a ruling class that need not answer to anyone but themselves. The arrogance with which they conduct the daily affairs of governance can be summed up easily, “let them eat cake”. When I watch her lie and spew the bs that pours out her pie hole I feel the need to offer her a carrot ( c’mon, I’m not the only one who sees the resemblance to Mr. Ed). Then when she starts flapping her arms and hands around I hope she’s preparing to take flight and fly far, far away. To be witness to what is happening in this province has a surreal quality to it, like a bad dream, an Orwellian novel, or a Province run by a Liberal Government with an agenda driven policy book where we don’t matter. All that matters is the implementation of the agenda, at any price. The price my friends is us, we are but mere tools to be suckered, bled and hung out to dry by our political masters. Masters elected by us, death by democracy. The real problem lies in the economics. The plain and simple truth is that not everyone can collect government paychecks. That would be governments at all levels. What we are headed for is Detroit, Greece, Italy, Spain, need I go on, where public sector unions control government and the unfunded liabilities far exceed the governments ability to pay them out without increased taxation or new revenue tools as premier Kathlenin so fondly refers to them as. Our future under this regime is similar to a sun that goes nova, burns out, creating an implosion that reduces a once shining star into a red dwarf or a black hole that sucks in everything within reach to destroy it as well. Consider modern day Ontario as the black hole of Canada, pity.
How I would like to see a corrupt Liberal government on trial go.

The prof does a fine job of dispelling all of the political fog around what is simply a new government-sponsored cartel system for big players in the energy industry. The end result for all of us is higher prices, fewer jobs, and a bigger bureaucracy. Thank you, The Rebel, for another outstanding report!

I find this woman so vile that I cannot bear to see an image of her. At every turn she sinks our province further into what will take decades to recover from (assuming that she doesn’t get re-elected) With each day a new low is reached “how will I tell my granddaughter?” in an effort to convince the lemmings to come along.
Fact is that she’s a corrupt bald faced liar, an opportunist seizing her 15 minutes of fame to ram her personal agendas down the throats on Ontarians.
We can only hope that opposition keeps her from realizing her twisted dreams until the next election rolls around but by then, it may be too late to undo the damage done.

Too true Mr. Collins, just another nail in Ontario’s coffin. Wynnie now has an excuse to add more gov’t, just remember what happened with the green energy and all the new agencies that were created to ‘manage’ the solar and wind contracts. Heaven help us, I think I may have to move out of province as I can’t afford to support these idiots any longer.

This liberal policy of picking winners and losers in the business community has to stop. I pay significant corporate taxes as a small business and now I will have to pay more in the form of a glorified consumption tax. These fools can’t figure out who is going to pay for this? I’ll give you a hint. It’s all consumers, including liberal supporters. All this for no benefit except liberal cronies. Call me unimpressed.

As the Doc said time is ticking before the public figures out how duped they have been in believing in global warming, thus gov’t realize they need to get these policies in now, so just around the next election they are going to take credit for global cooling…

This is how liberal pigs cut pollution – they regulate business into bankruptcy. With no business operating, pollution levels fall. And about the 0.4 TRILLION DOLLAR ONTARIO DEBT, well move along, there’s nothing to see there.

Funny I don’t remember Wynn mentioning this (a major tax increase disguised as a green con job) Cap and trade at election time. If so she has no mandate to implement such a sweeping tax – they way to deal with it is first, a massive backlash by industry and workers, failing that a general strike of the private sector will certainly seal the fate of the parasites feeding on it.

We are talking about a government so corrupt and debt ridden I bet that weekly they barely make payroll – zero cash flow weekly – extremely vulnerable to a general strike or any other economic crisis.

The Liberal Party of Ontario is far left of the NDP, having been taken over by true socialists like Wynne. It is time for them to be referred to as the Ontario Socialist Party. Ontario cannot compete for manufacturing jobs with this pension scheme and cap and trade. Time to leave.

We all need to write in to our local leaders and ask or demand a recall election! Maybe if enough of us flood there mailbox’s they will stop this nonsense.
We have the power, they do not!!!

Cost of energy goes up, business and industry leave. As if Ontario’s economy wasn’t already deep enough in the toilet. Thanks, Liberals.

WOOHOO! Ontario’s Enron!! You go girl!
Can we please have some sort of IQ or common sense test before you’re allowed to vote?

Socialists everywhere put their hands over their ears and sing “La la la” when the truth about “global warming” is spoken. The lie serves their purposes; they don’t want to hear the truth and they don’t want us to hear it either. But we HAVE heard it. This is a dead issue but they’ll continue flogging it until they can come up with another way to control and rob us.

Excellent interview, Marissa.

We all know Wynne’s untimely cap and trade plan is just her way of making Ontario’s poor pay to maintain the bloated sunshine-extorted labour-organized-and-owed bureaucracy. She should make some cuts to the sunshine to pay her debts instead of killing with higher energy costs poor seniors and disabled who already can’t afford to pay for heat in winter. And I do mean kill. People will die as a direct result of her plan to keep paying off the bureaucracy to comply with ongoing crime and corruption.

This is simply another method of CREATING wealth for a few where there was none before. Great comments by Dr. Mckitrick.

The real science is pretty clearly indicating that CO2 is NOT causing global warming and the AGW theory was completely wrong and all CO2 based legislation is a Ponzi Scheme to steal from energy producing democracies while pretending to help developing regions.

There’s more manure coming out of Wynne than there is at Dr. McKitrick’s agriculture school (U of G)

Ross McKitrick, a voice of reason in a world of Global Warming hysteria. “The science is settle” we always hear. Like cow spittle it is!
