The International Olympic Committee has given Islam El Shehaby a severe reprimand after refusing to shake hands with fellow Judo athlete Ori Sasson of Israel.
They said that, El Shehaby's action “was contrary to the rules of fair play and against the spirit of friendship embodied in the Olympic values.”
In addition, the IOC said that The Egyptian Olympic Committee “strongly condemned” his actions and sent him home.
According to the Associated Press, El Shehaby, is an ultraconservative Salafi Muslim who came under pressure from Islamist-leaning voices in Egypt before the Rio Games to withdraw. He decided to compete anyway.
The IOC has asked the Egyptian committee to ensure that its athletes “receive proper education on the Olympic values before coming to the Olympic Games.”
