Elizabeth May's electric car crusade fueled with hypocrisy, lies and bad math

David MenziesMission Specialist

Elizabeth May found herself in hot water after riding in a Victoria Day Parade in a very sporty Dodge Viper.

You'd think the leader of the Green Party would choose an electric car for the parade held in Victoria on Monday, like the Toyota Prius.

She certainly doesn't practice what she preaches, and her math on how British Columbians take to the roads is so bad that I had to contact an automotive consultancy firm to get the facts.

Missy Stephenson…. Might I suggest that before blowing another brain fart you cast back on your posted words and place them in the face of “Canadian Reality”? What" a recharge range of 300 kms ? Have your every driven Canada 1 across the prairies, or indeed Northern Ontario, or southern Alberta or southern B.C.? Canada is THE SECOND LARGEST LAND MASS COUNTRY on God’s green earth, and expecting to to drive it in a car that craps out every 300 kms is not only naive but indeed “suicidal” in winter months… Your are, in the argot of my older generation", a FRUITCAKE! and a dangerous one at that…

Andrew Stephenson if they are so cheap then no need for a government subsidy right?

Whoa! 300 km range! Thats about 1029 km short of a drive from Winnipeg to Calgary. Oh well. Figure on a one week trip. Of course the winter range that we need six months of the year will be considerably less unless you put a wood burning stove in it. What’s not to like?

“They never thought about that.. Idiots all…”

It’s been extensively analyzed. The car itself is a bit cheaper, because the drivetrain is simpler (a lot depends on whether you use high performing, but pricey permanent magnet motors, or cheap, but heavy, induction motors) and everything else is basically the same. The battery pack costs about $180/kwh right now (a third the cost of them five years ago) so a typical 40kwh battery is worth about $8000 right now. The cost savings have gone into increasing battery size rather than making them cheaper, which is why a Leaf now goes 300km on a charge instead of 100. Recycling is cheaper than the lithium you recover, so no net cost. Electricity? I hear Ontario produces about 20Gwh of surplus every night, enough to run at least a million cars entirely off of non-polluting energy, and other provinces also have grid surpluses as consumption has declined due to energy efficiency.

Great comment, Andy… But remember that May is from Cape Breton… I guess she found her “niche” in the “Land of Suzuki?”

Hilarious.. Robert M, I agree. Fat, Drunk and Stupid is no way to go through life.. And that pretty well sums up May, and the Green Party.. I drive a Golf R. It does not attract attention.. It’s a 4 door hatchback, but it’s also faster than a Dodge 392 Hemi Scat Pack Challenger… Yet, uses half the fuel.. “Green” is going the way of the Dinosaur.. What does it cost to create these cars? The Batteries? What does it cost to recycle those batteries? Where does the electricity come from to charge them up? How is that electricity produced? They never thought about that.. Idiots all…

Hey!.. What did you expect?… All prominent politicians on Saltspring Island drive Dodge Vipers!… The rest of the island’s pakalolo tokers bob and weave on bicycles through traffic high as a kite…

In the 2011 election campaign, I listened to May’s first Financial Speech. She said they will charge polluting companies to pollute and use the money to pay off student loans.
How would that help as these companies would simply charge their customers for May’s new charges and what do student loans have to do with pollution?
I can’t explain May’s thinking on this.

Not to mention the latest findings that electric cars are useless in winter b/c their lithium-ion batteries conk out even faster below 0 C than the lead-acid kind.

So why wasn’t she riding a bicycle a la Climate Barbie?

Hypocrisy, thy name is Leftist.

Typical of these lying global warming hypocrites!
Taxes, cutbacks and pain for Canadians, while these hypocrites continue to live the high life and large carbon footprints.

Looks to me like the only thing green, in the Green Party, is their leader.
