Five by-elections last night: Stephen Harper and Jason Kenney’s old ridings in Calgary were up, as well as the Markham-Thornhill riding in the Greater Toronto area, where John McCallum was from, until he was appointed Trudeau’s ambassador to China.
The last two ridings were in Ottawa Vanier, where Liberal Mauril Belanger passed away, where Stephane Dion was the MP until he was sent away by Trudeau, too, to become the new ambassador to the European Union.
First, I should tell you, there were no upsets:
The Conservatives won the two western ridings, and the Liberals won the three ridings in Ontario and Quebec. So the balance of Parliament remains the same.
But when you drill down on the results, it’s revealing.
I’m shocked that the Liberal lead in the Toronto area was cut in half in this media environment, aren’t you?
Trudeau did worse last night than he did last time. Conservatives did better. And the NDP isn’t in the game.
I like how that looks...
