We have more than 850,000 YouTube subscribers. That makes us one of the biggest YouTube news channels in the world — by far the biggest in Canada.
But YouTube released a new policy this week.
It’s “an update to fight terror content online,” and while it starts out talking about terrorism, it quickly moves on to what YouTube calls “controversial” ideas.
Well, all our content at The Rebel is “controversial,” especially to thin-skinned whiners on the left.
Here’s more from the YouTube announcement:
“[W]e have begun working with more than 15 additional expert NGOs and institutions (…) including the Anti-Defamation League, the No Hate Speech Movement, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. These organizations bring expert knowledge of complex issues like hate speech.”
The ADL has already fingered us, remember? Their recent report on the "alt-right" named The Rebel three times.
So do you think we have a few months left on YouTube? Maybe a few days?
I’m certain it’s coming. That's why I’ve got a plan:
We’re going to build a free app.
This software application will let you watch The Rebel on your smart phone — iPhone or Android — your laptop, or smart TV, like Roku or Apple TV.
Among many other features, it will also have all our TV shows behind the paywall. (We’re launching NEW premium shows after Labour Day, so the timing is perfect.)
Most importantly, we’ll own this app outright, so no one like Youtube can have power over us.
And no one can have that power over you, and what you watch.
But we don’t have the budget to build this app on our own.
That’s why we need your help.
Developing the app is going to cost us a lot of money. You can read the breakdown of our budget at TheyCantStopUs.com.
But in short, the total is $302,000. That's the biggest expense we’ve ever had at The Rebel.
By the way, that's also what the CBC spends, of your tax dollars, in only one hour and 45 minutes. I did the math.
And if we were the CBC, we would just take your money from your taxes — $1.5 billion a year. We can’t. We’re 100 per cent reliant on our viewers. Which is why we are so careful with our spending, and so attentive to what people want to hear.
And that’s precisely why they want to stop us.
We know we can raise this money with your help:

Please help The Rebel live — and thrive. Thank you!
