YouTube’s new censorship rules target The Rebel: But we have a plan — and you can help

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

We have more than 850,000 YouTube subscribers. That makes us one of the biggest YouTube news channels in the world — by far the biggest in Canada.

But YouTube released a new policy this week.

It’s “an update to fight terror content online,” and while it starts out talking about terrorism, it quickly moves on to what YouTube calls “controversial” ideas.

Well, all our content at The Rebel is “controversial,” especially to thin-skinned whiners on the left.

Here’s more from the YouTube announcement:

“[W]e have begun working with more than 15 additional expert NGOs and institutions (…) including the Anti-Defamation League, the No Hate Speech Movement, and the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. These organizations bring expert knowledge of complex issues like hate speech.”

The ADL has already fingered us, remember? Their recent report on the "alt-right" named The Rebel three times.

So do you think we have a few months left on YouTube? Maybe a few days?

I’m certain it’s coming. That's why I’ve got a plan:

We’re going to build a free app.

This software application will let you watch The Rebel on your smart phone — iPhone or Android — your laptop, or smart TV, like Roku or Apple TV.

Among many other features, it will also have all our TV shows behind the paywall. (We’re launching NEW premium shows after Labour Day, so the timing is perfect.)

Most importantly, we’ll own this app outright, so no one like Youtube can have power over us.

And no one can have that power over you, and what you watch.

But we don’t have the budget to build this app on our own.

That’s why we need your help.

Developing the app is going to cost us a lot of money. You can read the breakdown of our budget at TheyCantStopUs.com.

But in short, the total is $302,000. That's the biggest expense we’ve ever had at The Rebel.

By the way, that's also what the CBC spends, of your tax dollars, in only one hour and 45 minutes. I did the math.

And if we were the CBC, we would just take your money from your taxes — $1.5 billion a year. We can’t. We’re 100 per cent reliant on our viewers. Which is why we are so careful with our spending, and so attentive to what people want to hear.

And that’s precisely why they want to stop us.

We know we can raise this money with your help:

To get the breakdown of our $302,000 budget, and learn about the perks for donors, go to TheyCantStopUs.com.

Please help The Rebel live — and thrive. Thank you!

NEXT: The Rebel's Faith Goldy and I talk more about YouTube censorship, and why The Rebel needs to build this app so we can keep bringing you the other side of the story.

THEN: Our own Tommy Robinson comes on to talk about his new book Mohammed's Koran, which shot to the #1 spot at Amazon.co.uk, and is a bestseller on Amazon.com and Amazon.ca too.

Space Moose, I appreciate the brainstorming; are you suggesting audio only reports as a solution?
I would not like that approach at all.

An app does not mean independence. You are still at the mercy of Apple and Google allowing you on their store and operating system. Plenty of apps get pulled from the App Store. However, I do like the idea. All of the conservative platforms have terrible apps. The Breitbart app is awful and the Fox News app is not that much better. Here’s to hoping that the high price tag means a high quality product.

I like the suggestions of the Rebels who would like to see Rebel Media host a conservative platform, and it would help defray the costs.
Ezra, I think it would be a good idea to discuss this with your team; and, reach out to Jordan Peterson. He will be launching an on-line University and perhaps the two of you can look at developing this APP together.

The proposed app won’t fix anything if Google bans the rebel on you tube. Don’t forget Google owns Android. This means that Google can block the rebel app from being downloaded on the Android store. And with Ezra’s luck, Apple will probably block the rebel from releasing the app on apple devices as well.

So if you donate with the good intention on getting around Google or Apple, then you are just wasting your money.

Here is my idea. Upload audio only versions of the videos onto audio only sites or apps such as stitcher or sound cloud.

Hey Ezra why not make the Rebel a hosting site for all conservative content creators. If youtube does go full Nazi there will be lots of conservatives left out in the cold. It would help defray your costs and give a platform to our allies. The Rebel could become the conservative youtube.

What concerns me is that Obama handed over control of the internet to the UN. They will do anything to shut down those who stand against their goal of a one world government.

Jimmy Reece, you keep posting the same shite. You have accused Ezra of this before, go away!
commented 2017-08-02 21:58:02 -0400
PFEZZ FEEZ, maybe you can e-mail Ezra directly with your phone number and ask that he call you to go over what IT issues you have noted.

How about allowing a monthky donation rather than a lump sum. Would be easier for me and more money for the support of the program
commented 2017-08-02 21:49:56 -0400
Ezra, when this day comes, will you email all of your subscribers?
I have no idea what an app is!

Here we go again – give us money with no real transparency. Why does it cost $302,000? What if I know someone that can create such an app for a few thousand dollars? How much is actually going to the app and how much is going into your pocket?

Paul MCCollough——Paul, last time that you posted these two alternatives, I checked them out, and they are absolutely nothing without Facebook. So the question is if Facebook cuts you off, what good are your alternatives if they depend on Facebook? I am not criticising you, I just don’t understand the logic.

I will donate but think its a poor and expensive idea.
Put the subscription videos on Vimeo and display them on your website to logged in users, and the public videos use youtube and vid.me , no expensive infrastructure to pay for and maintain, you will also maintain a better social media presence.
I work in the IT industry fyi, you’ve been hosed on this proposal.
commented 2017-08-02 21:19:13 -0400
You rock, Ezra. I donated.

Ezra, The Rebel isn’t the only Free Speech site in North America; There must be 50 in the same boat. Gavin probably knows 30 personally. What about Stephen Molyneux? He is concerned also. Why not share the app and the expenses.
I’m just as worried about Zuckenburg; he has already censored half of Europe.
Where does it end? I will donate, if there is an end in sight.

Not really related to todays video, but I imagine an episode about the UCP leadership race is on the horizon and I really feel you should disavow your previous endorsement for Jason Kenney. He’s getting praised in the MSM for having no-policy, and his platform is just the word “grassroots” repeated over and over again. More disturbing is his Twitter which is mostly a collection of tweets promoting identity politics and his infatuation with anti-Trump posts. Kenney never misses an opportunity to like an anti-Trump tweet. He’s Trudeau without the carbon tax.

I will be throwing in bucks because the principle of free speech and expression cannot be violated. However, two questions.

1. Will the app still not be subject to an umbrella host? I am not a technophile, so do not understand the process, but I note that anytime I want an app it is through Apple and I can only obtain an App through a monitored account.

2. Has The Rebel reached that cusp of corporate restructure where a share issue is needed for capital. I am not sure how that can work, because editorial control needs to be retained and the left is notorious for buying shares for agenda. Maybe a minor block of shares to 25% is issued with no shareholder in that block owning more than 0.5%. But it seems The Rebel is at that point of its corporate development for capital needs?

That written, I will now do my bit ‘to keep fighting for freedom.’
commented 2017-08-02 21:09:44 -0400
I just made a donation. The Left is very powerful, so the people have to fight back.

- This has been coming for some time. Google/YouTube, Twitter & Facebook sold out to the EU some time ago. They announced that this crackdown on basic freedom was coming. The app is a good idea. Infowars has done the same thing some time ago. If YouTube shuts down your sites I’d also suggest posting on alternative sites like Minds, Vid.me, etc. since people will be moving there as well. As the big 3 social media sites kick out anyone who indulges in wrong-think they will push people to there sites.

- Ordered Tommys’ new book. Looking forward to reading it. (I wanted the hardcover book.)

Keep up the freedom fight Ezra against Trudeau and his Islamic Gestapo and the anti free speech femmo-nazi – SJW hypocrites …… The real “hate speech” takes place every day in every mosque across the western world and it’s actually encouraged by “our” politicians and the cowardly MSM Eunuchs.

Liberals have a pattern of forming incestuous relationships…

I was very surprised to see Jordan Peterson’s twitter messages yesterday. Inexplicably, it was shut down, and later restored.
Ezra, so glad Rebel Media will launch an App I am quite willing to donate to see this happen.
I think YouTube will pull the plug, it’s only a matter of time. They are cracking down on anyone who violates their group think policies, and doesn’t want neo-marxist garbage pushed on them.
As msm dies it’s slow death, alternative media sources are delivering what cannot be found in msm. Now, the establishment is scrambling to limit how and when we seek the truth; and they will make it nearly impossible to find the truth.

Great interview with Tommy, I’m waiting for my copy to arrive.
I think Imams will instruct their followers not to read the book.

Paul Joseph Watson has a video on this very point. Why do it alone? Conservatives should get together and form Alt-Tube.
commented 2017-08-02 20:39:58 -0400
I am sure he definitely has, however there is a need for an app like youtube to keep playing those videos.
commented 2017-08-02 20:19:32 -0400
Ezra, you don’t have a local backup copy of all of your videos?
