How can a conservative support a carbon tax? WATCH my “awkward and brutal” debate with Mark Cameron

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

I was at the Conservative convention last weekend in Vancouver, and I bumped into my old friend Mark Cameron. I’ve known him for years from Conservatives circles.

But these days, he runs a pressure group called Canadians for Clean Prosperity, lobbying for a carbon tax. They have other conservatives on their board, like Monte Solberg, the former cabinet minister. They’ve even had Stockwell Day at an event.

It gives me the willies.

Mark wanted to engage with me, so I invited him to drop by our studio for a debate. I told him I’d give him equal time and the last word.

Watch how it went: a bit awkward at first, then maybe even a bit brutal. I’ll see you on the other end, for my final thoughts.

(Editor’s note: After the debate, Mark Cameron consulted Guy Giorno, a leading lawyer in the field of Canadian lobbying law, who wrote an opinion letter about Clean Prosperity’s activities. You can read it in full here.)

Ezra, I’m with you on this one. This sounds like selling “a pig in a poke” to me.

Wow!! Way to go Rebel staff. This has to be your finest hour. Wow, to tell you the truth I am floored by this presentation. Yes this juggernaut is formidable, but we must not give up. Way to go, now lets move forward.

Ezra, I hope you stay on this until you find out who is funding this group, your friend sold out.

This Mark Cameron is a what I call a “Red Tory” , he better off with the Liberals cause he uses the same sources they do.

Like I was saying, the entire system has to change. They force us to pay more and they live off of it.
The PC’s, the Liberals, the NDP, they all make us pay more so they can get more from us for nothing.
Mark Cameron is no different to me than Urz Heer. Twisting the truth for a buck.
It is all lies and bullshit. The system has to change or someones gonna get hurt real bad.

I wish that politicians would tell the truth about the lies about Climate change and the hoax of carbon taxes. All the tax will do is make us a lot poorer which will cause a lot of grief and loss of jobs. I personally will not vote for any politician who will not tell the truth about this horrendous hoax on humanity.

Even though you’re no longer a lawyer I am glad you haven’t lost your skills. There’s always a reason why Pinocchio doesn’t want to reveal who the puppet master is. Because the truth of what is going on would be as plain as the nose on his face.

When anyone spends that much time telling me that what he is doing is legal my bullshit meter goes into overdrive. I have never seen a more classic illustration of:

FOLLOW THE MONEY

SO!! Mr Cameron aligns himself with idiot moron “young” voters?!? Leave the PC party and go give Mr Mulclair a big hug – you are explaining exactly why you are an idiot!
Climate Change – BAH BIG HUMBUG!!! All you Climatard morons – keep your stupid mouths shut & quit all the flatulence you produce and surely CO2 levels will drop!
Cameron is a FRAUD!! Kick his scrawny ass out of the Conservative party!!!!
And if Monty Solberg says yes to a carbon tax – he had better move his ass out of Southern Alberta!!

Mark Cameron you are full of shit!!
Honest scientists (not Suzuki, Gore or Soros fundsters) DO NOT AGREE ABOUT CO2 / GLOBAL WARMING ! Stop your childish rhetoric and get with the program! Educate yourself!
You are being a Libtard and we will not accept your crap!
Don’t ever show your lying face in Northern Alberta – you won’t be able to run out of here fast enough!

Ezra – maybe you ought to VET your friends a bit better – this guy is an idiot and needs to keep his lying bullshit to himself! This guy is no friend of hard working Canadian oil industry workers. There is a lot more of us than what you politicos think!!

Ezra – Mark’s batting for the wrong side now. He must have been trained by Preston Manning! I think we need to start another conservative party. One that isn’t so easily bought and paid for!

Has anyone ever noticed how proponents of Global Warming when arguing their point tend to subtly throw in “smog” in with the CO2 gas?

The whole GW theory is based upon Carbon Dioxide only creating a greenhouse effect, but smog contains mostly sulphuric and nitrogen oxides which everyone with any common sense hates.

Smog, however, subtly gets added to support the GW argument when those gases are not actually part of the GW theory. By including smog in the argument it is an attempt make GW more acceptable to the doubters.

“A better form of taxation” is no taxation, not a carbon tax. Also, once a tax is in, it never goes away. Even if you make it revenue neutral, come the budget following such a scheme, that “neutrality” will shrink and disappear and there the government has another revenue stream.

Cameron want to appeal to low-information voters for the sake of vote-getting, and vote-getting alone; no different than the Liberals in this regard.

Cameron is wrong about Muller—Muller was a former skeptic, turned believer, but he dismissed the hockey stick as “irrelevant,” he didn’t come out and support it. (As an aside, even if he had added 20,000 data points to recreate the hockey stick, it would have been a no-brainer. The problem with the ‘hockey stick’ is that you can put ANY data into Mann’s statistical algorithm—hell even your lottery numbers—and you’ll ALWAYS get a hockey stick. After 10,000 red noise tests, [i.e. plugging in randomly generated numbers], McIntyre and McKitrick got a hockey-stick every time).

Also, the Koch Foundation clarified that it funded only a study on recent surface temperature trends, not including oceanic temperatures trends – it did not fund new data, nor did it fund an examination of climate change. Cameron is dead wrong on this. Muller’s findings are his own, and therefore his motivations are also his own.

He’s also wrong wrong about the 1998 to 2012 data series. The pause is until at least mid-2015. This is an El Nino year, and there’s a high probability a La Nina will follow next year (with very cool temperatures). He’s dead wrong about the sharply rising temps as RICHARD WAKEFIELD pointed out.

His lack of disclosure is highly suspicious. I don’t trust this guy, sorry if he’s your friend Ezra—too smug, too secretive, too much like a Liberal.

I am having some connection issues which is a good thing. This is just painful! Now even the conservatives I have trusted want to tax the air I breathe. I saw a post on cencorface one day about a device that could plant a million trees in some remarkably short time. My thought was, why would you bother to plant that many trees when we’re all evidently doing our collective best to deprive them of their food – you know – carbon diaxide…The Western world has lost its mind.

EZRA , you asked us if you were fair , yes you were fair to us , because of your tenacity and guts you got to the heart of the matter, and that’s what your there for,
To be fair to us

More rapid climate change than, ever? Nope. There is absolutely no physical evidence of that. Not even the IPCC report on extreme weather events makes that claim.

The warming is actually just an average. That increase in average is because winters are getting shorter and not as cold. Summer temps in Canada have actually gotten cooler, not hotter. So says Environment Canada data.

The link between CO2 and increasing temps, changing climate exists only in highly flawed computer models.

The 2C increase is the worst case scenario in the range the IPCC claims. There are many science papers which shows the sensitivity to CO2 is less than 1C with a doubling of CO2.

Mark doesnt know the actual science. The bottom line is there is nothing abnormal happening. Nothing that hasnt happened before. To claim that the last 0.0000000001% of earth history can be used to show we change the climate is absolutely absurd.

How can a conservative support a carbon tax? I’ve been asking that myself lately. CO2 levels lag temperature changes – effect doesn’t precede cause. CO2 levels have continued to rise as temperatures have not. Mark’s playing loose with the facts here. It’s not the government’s job to herd the people around as they see fit in the name of pseudoscience.

Have to call it. Mark may have once been a Conservative once, maybe even a good one. But for whatever reason he’s not one now. He sounds like a spokesman for the Ontario Liberals or Alberta NDP – the provinces he lobbies in. Patrick Brown is going to cause Conservatives in Ontario to avoid voting at all in the next election.

Ezra gets the win on every front here. – The science doesn’t match the "solutions. The “solutions” don’t match the politics. This is how these groups get someone like Patrick Brown into a leadership position.
