Conservative Party convention: Looking back at Harper -- and ahead to the future

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

The Conservative Party is having its big convention in Vancouver, and The Rebel will be there in force — I’ll be there, Brian Lilley, Sheila Gunn Reid, Faith Goldy, a whole team — nine of us in all. If you’re going, too, come up and say hello!

Tonight I’ll tell you my thoughts on the eve of the convention.

First, I’ll review, in depth, the Harper years — the good and the bad.

How about the present? Rona Ambrose is interim leader and is holding down the fort. But when a conservative leader of the opposition is so consistently praised by the media, you’re doing it wrong.

(They loved Joe Clark, too, because he was good at losing.)

I’ll tell you what I think of the leadership candidates.

(Kevin O’Leary isn’t serious, in my view — he lives in the States, and is just enjoying building his media celebrity, like a poor man’s Donald Trump.)

Conservatives can’t out-Trudeau Trudeau. But when the media starts squawking, that’s when you know you’ve found the right candidate...

NEXT: Our own Faith Goldy joins me to talk about who would be the best leader for the Conservatives. We also preview The Rebel's exclusive convention coverage.

THEN: I believe the Tories are still shell shocked over their election defeat. Saskatchewan MP Garnett Genuis and I discuss the state of the party right now.

The Conservative Party needs a strong Conservative leader & agenda, otherwise they might as well forget about forming the next government.

I think the CPC has to build on one the biggest positive impacts Harper has had on the PMO, regardless how the lib and their media mouthpieces have narrated it. And that is his honesty and integrity he brought with him. It is one the next leader will have to continue to build upon in order to attract more voters to the CPC and also to get them to show at the polls (again)

Peter Netterville: Michael Mann cannot see the moral degradation in our society caused by the left/socialist policies

Are you deciding the moral state of the society? Fuck you!

Good show Ezra!!!

Michael, I have to thank you for all your work here. It is important to keep people hopping. Mocking them is a good way to do that, you are a true Conservative, if still in the closet.

Thanks again for motivating the troops.

“Okay, so then you have any facts, truth, evidence or logic to counter my comments.”

is to read

“Okay, so then you do not have any facts, truth, evidence or logic to counter my comments.”

Thank you, Michael Mann, for proving for all to see that you really cannot respond as a mature individual.
commented 2016-05-27 22:08:21 -0400
Michael said, "There are no counter arguments to your idiocy. There really isn’t an opposing view to batshit crazy – you are just batshit crazy. When you say something reasonable or sensible for once, then I would be happy to provide counter arguments. "

Okay, so then you have any facts, truth, evidence or logic to counter my comments. That’s all you had to say rather than your spew of insults.
commented 2016-05-27 20:03:28 -0400

There are no counter arguments to your idiocy. There really isn’t an opposing view to batshit crazy – you are just batshit crazy. When you say something reasonable or sensible for once, then I would be happy to provide counter arguments.

But here is a question for you – if extreme conservatives can win elections – then what is the holdup? If you say that Canadians are dying for an extreme conservative party, then it would make sense that the conservative party would give Canadians exactly what they want. So again, what is the holdup? There is a future election to win – I would love to see an extreme conservative party vs. Trudeau.

It will not go your way, but you seem to be convinced otherwise.

Peter, you are asking the impossible of Gordo Steele. It can not provide factual anything because it deflects when caught.
commented 2016-05-27 16:26:12 -0400
Michael said, "Yes – the kind of the EXTREME conservative party that YOU want – has absolutely no chance in Canada. "

Yes, you DO keep saying that over and over and over ad infinitum, ad nausium.

Michael said, "I come here to read what you have to say to get a good chuckle. "

I am glad I am able to provide you with entertainment, but I have yet to get any counter arguments (using facts and evidence, not emotions and insults) from you.

If my comments are so “worthy of insults and mockery” because it’s absolute “idiocy mixed with hyperbole and fear mongering” then it should be an easy thing for you to counter my comments with facts, truth, evidence and logic.

Seems to me all you can do is post insults and hate. Try replying with a well though out reasoned fact based argument, if you are able.

@ D Mary said, "That is, if you must feed the troll. "

Trolls need to eat as well!
commented 2016-05-27 14:37:20 -0400

Because your position is only worthy of insults and mockery. I literally laugh at the things you post on here, because it’s absolute idiocy mixed with hyperbole and fear mongering. The way you think and your views is comedy to me – I come here to read what you have to say to get a good chuckle.
commented 2016-05-27 14:30:25 -0400

Yes – the kind of the EXTREME conservative party that YOU want – has absolutely no chance in Canada. Completely unelectable as opposed to say center right.

Even Stephen Harper knew that.

Canadians are socially liberal – even those that may be fiscally conservative. An extreme conservative doesn’t have a hope in hell of being elected.
commented 2016-05-27 13:40:32 -0400
All, if you really feel the need to reply to or refer to Michael Mann, Sean Penson, Benita Dunn, you save some time and keystrokes by just calling it by its real name, the paid lefttard pathetic hypocritical troll Gordo Steele. That is, if you must feed the troll.
commented 2016-05-27 11:34:05 -0400
Those that point out that Canada is headed on a downward spiral are mocked by people like Michael Mann because people like Michael Mann cannot see the moral degradation in our society caused by the left/socialist policies and mockery is really all Michael and people like his can offer in response.

So people, feel sorry for people like Michael Mann because he truly is incapable of responding intelligently to the very real threat to the moral fabric of our society with anything but insults and mockery.
commented 2016-05-27 11:27:10 -0400
Michael Mann, you whole argument is that if the Conservative party does not become a left wing party, they have no chance.

That is a load of fecal matter. There are more people in Canada that like the things real Conservatives stand for that you, the socialist/communist left believes.

1) Low taxes
2) Small government
3) Real freedom of speech, not the "You can say anything you like, except … " speech we have now.
4) True capitalism without government controlling the market
5) Focus of the family unit: Parents control what education and how children are raised.

Just naming a few.

The left in Canada are opposed to the 5 things I mentioned.

The Conservatives have to recapture what it really means to be a Conservative and present a clear alternative to the crap offered by all the left wing parties today.

If the Conservative party become just another left wing party like all the rest of them, then there is no reason to choose the Conservatives over any other left wing party, which is the whole purpose of people like Michael Mann trying to push the Conservatives to the left even more.
commented 2016-05-27 10:05:56 -0400
The conservative party can’t beat Trudeau and they know it, despite the attempt they will make.

Speaking of comedy how about Junior’s proposal for the rest of the G7 to spend big time on “infrastructure”…..nothing but crickets from the adults in the room. Poor little Junior. Yup, Canada sure is back. The Tories need to hold the line and let the little twit self destruct.

The fear mongering is comedy gold here.

Canada is doomed!!!!!!

There will be no future for the CPC unless they start becoming a REAL conservative party.

There IS no future.

Canada’s political gyroscope is stuck in a 20th century political system, with anti-democratic political processes, and a sheer absence of democracy in any of it’s parliamentary processes. There is a NEW 21st century option for Canadians based on TRUTH and honest democratic representation ~ the Truthriver National Party of Canada! ~ wetsuits are mandatory!
commented 2016-05-27 00:56:28 -0400

The the vast majority of Canadians are not conservatives, then there is no good reason to have a conservative party. Abolish it. Any conservative party in Canada will have to compete with the Liberals or the NDP, which is a betrayal of everything that is conservative.

It is fine for Canada to remain a liberal cesspool. Keep spending and running massive and unrecoverable deficits. Expand the public service and increase taxation to no limit. Get everyone on the welfare bandwagon and get the government to spend and tax that much more. At last, bankrupt Canada. And allow multiculturalism to grow unhindered. Open the borders and let everyone in and get them on welfare as well. Wreck the place and allow Islamists to run amok. Let the chaos grow until there is civil war. Yes. It will require a massive bloodletting. Set one group against the other and hope they drive each other off the cliff. No matter. In the midst of all the chaos, enterprising Americans will come north with their powerful armies and liberate the true conservatives of Canada. Carve out a massive chunk, all of Western Canada all the way to the Arctic and realize the siren’s call of America’s Manifest Destiny. Leave Toronto and Quebec to their sodomy and perpetual infighting until they are all dead.

In the end, it is inevitable that conservatives will be the last ones remaining. A massive portion of North America will belong to them and a new truly conservative republic will emerge. Powerful, strong, united, and conservative, the republic will unassailable. As for whatever the Progressivist-Sodomites have to themselves, they will infect and soil with their excrement, which is typical of their piggish behavior.

Ezra made a fair evaluation of the Harper government, and his evaluation of the MSM diagnosis of the Conservative Party’s ‘problem’ of being too right, is right on. The MSM will always try to move the right as far to the left as it can con them into. It never works for anyone but the left. Of course, once Little Benito has rigged the electoral system to ensure a perpetual Liberal government, it won’t make any difference, will it? Nope.
commented 2016-05-27 00:45:47 -0400
Dieter, I totally agree with you. For all the pretense of conservative reform of his time as PM, Harper just nibbled around the edges of it, nothing more. The number one failure of his government was to leave the Liberals’ taxpayer-funded propaganda arm , theCBC, intact, and just as Marxist (or more so) as it was when he took office.
commented 2016-05-27 00:22:08 -0400

Since none of that will ever happen, your point is moot.

Did it ever occur to you that the vast majority of Canadians are not “real” conservatives and they don’t want the kind of Canada that you want. The majority of Canadians are liberal in varying degrees – from center left to far left.

I think you are simply out of touch when it comes to Canada and what Canadians want.
commented 2016-05-26 23:41:03 -0400

Harper should have and could ripped the CBC apart. Instead, he makes a modest one-time cut and hands the whole thing over to James Moore, who defended the CBC at every opportunity.

CINOs at work.
commented 2016-05-26 23:39:06 -0400

Canada will have to go bankrupt and fall into the depths of Islamist chaos before things change. If that is the case, let JT have free rein, and even encourage him by voting him back in time and time again. Once the temper of the chaos ramps up high enough, and the CINOs in the CPC have departed for their Liberal patronage appointments, the remnants of the CPC will be the true conservatives. By then, the US will have broken up, leaving the Red States as a powerful and truly conservative republic (The Blue States will have become infected by their sodomy by then.) True conservatives in Canada can then carve out what territory that is rightfully theirs and seek welcome annexation by the Red States republic.
commented 2016-05-26 23:39:04 -0400
Harper did make some cuts to the CBC.
Regarding The cons of the day, I agree they are not making nearly enough of the right kind of noise.
commented 2016-05-26 23:32:13 -0400

The CINOs in the CPC are, for the vast majority of them, conservatives by convenience.

If Rona Ambrose and Michelle Rempel lived in, either, Vancouver or Toronto, rather than Edmonton and Calgary, they would be, without any doubt, Liberals. They are CINOs who opted to become CPC MPs for the sake of having political careers. Indeed, they try to talk like conservatives, but you know that when they head for the washroom, they vomit. For the sake of their political careers, they are dishonest to the extreme. Judging by Ambrose’s Nerfball games with JT, and Rempel’s sudden feminist activism, they do reveal their true selves.

And there is every reason to attack Harper as a complete failure because he really is a failure.

He governed as a liberal, avoided anything that looked like conservatism, and expanded government, for political reasons, at every opportunity. Instead of denouncing the CBC, which is the easiest thing in the world to do, he was always silent on the matter. Or, he would charge James Moore to be the CBC most fervent defender. Harper is a conservative for convenience, but a liberal to the core.
