Why the Conservative Party convention was “a gong show”

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

I’m back from the Conservative Party of Canada’s convention in lovely Halifax. I was there with Sheila Gunn Reid, our Alberta bureau chief, and two of our staff, Eitan and Efron.

We covered a lot of ground. And we had a meet and greet for Rebel supporters, and hundreds of people came out. It was so jam-packed, the hotel was afraid we'd violate the fire code.

But the convention itself — well, that’s a different matter...

As you know, on the eve of the convention, Maxime Bernier quit the Conservatives, and said he was contemplating setting up his own party.

Had Bernier simply delayed his exit by a few days, it would have helped him — he could have pointed to the gong show of the convention as proof that he had to leave it.

I call it a gong show for a few reasons.

First: Andrew Scheer has made protecting Quebec’s dairy cartel his signature issue. The dairy cartel literally had 25 lobbyists in attendance. I can’t imagine that any other group had more than one or two.

We know this because a huge dairy lobbyist binder was left on the table of a restaurant, and it was found by a regular party member, who made the contents public. And these documents make it clear that the whole thing was a stitch up from the start. We spoke to many delegates who thought they actually had a chance to shape the party’s direction; they were infuriated by these rigged rules in the dairy cartel's favour, by the way supply management was intentionally placed at the very end of the agenda, making a real debate on the issue impossible.

And of course, Andrew Scheer banned The Rebel from the conference. Even some of his staffers opposed this, and told Scheer this to his face. It didn't make any difference.

I’m absolutely certain that the only real reason why Scheer banned The Rebel is because the other media bullied him into doing it. That’s not just a theory, either, as I'll explain tonight.

Anyway, as promised, I delivered our petition of 10,000 party members demanding that we be allowed in to the convention — but Scheer had a six-member security team watching us the whole time. When we walked to the door, they sent someone to block us, but not even a Conservative staffer. Instead, they sent out... a student intern from the convention centre. Again, so weird.

Look, Justin Trudeau needs to be replaced. The only party that can replace him is the Conservatives. (Maxime Bernier doesn’t yet have a new party, and it won’t win.

Perhaps Scheer thinks that means any conservative in the country is trapped, and must support him.

That’s what Patrick Brown thought, too...

I will make a prediction and it’s an unhappy one:

Unless Andrew Scheer finds some courage somewhere, and realizes that his true enemy is the liberal media, he will lose the next election.

And the Conservative Party will be much more divided, much smaller and much weaker than the one he inherited from Harper.

NEXT: Our Alberta Bureau Chief, Sheila Gunn Reid, comes on to talk more about the Conservative convention, and the issue of birthright citizenship, which is now under scrutiny after a leaked Liberal memo.

THEN: One of our favourite guests and experts, Manny Montenegrino, joins me to talk about Trump's trade deal with Mexico, and what Trudeau's Liberals are doing while this important deal is taking place.

FINALLY: Your messages to me!

Flat and others; Wouldn’t Max score way easier with Quebec than Andy?

I don’t understand why Conservatives would even be discussing the Dairy Cartel, when it will either be out due to NAFTA, or in (and no NAFTA), but either way, the decision will be made soon and will become a moot point.

There’s enough time for Scheer, but that’s not the point. He doesn’t have it in him – PERIOD! That’s why Max was so frustrated. Every time Scheer sat quiet must’ve driven Max crazy!! Scheer’s statement on birth Tourism says it all!!

The “experts” not weighing in today?

I just answered my latest fundraising request from the CP. I told them I spent all my extra money on a Rebel subscription and suggested they could get their buddies at the cbc to kick in a few bucks.

Even when Smilin’ Andy actually manages to espouse a policy that sounds conservative, you know he will back down the moment he is challenged by the left stream media. The man is utterly hopeless and I don’t think he can change even if he wanted to because he utterly lacks conviction. He is the wrong man at the wrong place at the wrong time.

Vote for Andrew is a vote for Justin. Please give generously to Maxim Bernier’s campaign.!!

Obscurity not up security… Damn spellcheck

Bruce Atchison… Agreed… Jason Kenney was sent here to make sure that the Cino’s didn’t fade away into up security… His agenda was to come from Ontario and push his way into the wild Rose. The PCs were voted out with a vengeance and that’s because what they did to them selves in the wild Rose was gaining too much popularity and that had to be stopped and Jason Kenney was the man.

If Manny’s scary scenario is correct, a disaster for our auto industry and our economy, that may well be the pathway for Trudeau’s re-election as the hate Trump vote thatbhe is depending upon would likely increase dramatically. Maybe that is why Scheer in his convention speech had somewhat of a hate Trump tone to it.

Jonathan… We cannot have sheer for the next p.m. as Andrew was the best conservative the Liberals could buy for the money.. what people just don’t get is there is no difference between Justin Trudeau or Andrew sheer .!!

- The Gong Show was at least entertaining. Scheer seems to be forever looking for ways to undermine the party he’s supposed to be leading. I don’t care at this point if it’s on purpose, because he’s taking horrible advice or just incompetent. This will have real consequences. The CPC should be 10 points up & wondering why they’re not further ahead. He screws over the grassroots & he’ll be lucky to hold the opposition roll.

- What good does it do to pass motions when, at the slightest whim of the CBC, Scheer will fold faster than Superman on laundry day.

- So the leader of a country (Mexico) that Trump practically considers public enemy #1 is able to pull off a trade agreement with Trump. Canada is being run by a bunch of fools with the minds of high school kids & the opposition is owned by the very cartel that is now sinking us.

So little Justi’e has to face up to the Trump and make some deals, oooh. Poor Justi’e better not forget his Tin Hat.

Ezra talking up a Troll is unfair to us poor faithful Commenter’s, who do our best not to talk to it, every day.

Ezra, I take no joy in what I am about to write, but write it I must. Concerning Scheer and his strategy you have been quite short sighted and very unfair. As far as the dairy is concerned, why should we be willing to scrap supply management when the US protects their dairy as well, even more so. Second, on birthright citizenship you completely glossed over where Scheer said he will not allow it to be abused like Trudeau has. Third, this country is in a war for something way more important than the auto sector and our economy. Our very freedom, democracy and national security are under attack from within by Trudeau and his Liberals. We can never loose sight of this and if Scheer is going to become our next PM and save our freedom, democracy and national security then he needs all the allies he can get and apease all other oppoints so he has a clear path to the evil that is Trudeau. The last thing you want when facing down a fierce and dangerous monster is to be distracted by swatting flies. Harper lost 2015 because he lost the PR battle. Scheer cant afford to make that mistake when our very freedom is on the line.

Ezra you criticize Bernier for not attending the convention. He anticipated the gong show on his Facebook page before the Convention. That rang true and presumably part of why he didn’t come. This fiasco, particularly as the fix was in even if a motion to drop supply management had passed at the convention, fits with Bernier calling the party “corrupt”.

Scheer is a globalist plant into the conservative party. That psychopathic smile says all you need to know. Everything about him turns my stomach because he’s a fake conservative! I wonder how much he was paid to destroy the conservative party for the globalists. I think Bernier could pull it off because many people who voted for the puppet Trudeau are realizing how dangerous he really is.

Looks like history is sort of repeating. The PCA has been infiltrated, just like Wildrose was. Leftists are good at co-opting parties and making them tilt leftward. The UPC under Jason Kenny and the PCA under Andrew Scheer are both being pulled leftward.

I also disagee, Ezra. Flatwater..Flatearth made some great points. I think conservatives would jump at the chance NOT to vote for Scheer. Scheer consistently buckles to the media and that is a huge weakness. I’m sure Scheer is a nice man. But Bernier sees where we’re heading as a country (hell) and has had the bravery to say what needs to be said. I would vote for him in second and I think lots of other Albertans would, as well. He should choose an escalator of his own maybe, ride down it and make a speech that would knock the media sideways. Start things off with a nice big bang.

It’s not only the liberal media which will make sure of conservative defeat. Andrew Scheer is his own worst enemy, or rather his liberal-lite, globalist, anti-canadian policies are the main reason no true conservative will ever vote for him.
Voting for him would be (assuming he wins) nothing more than replacing Trudeau with Scheer with absolutely NO change in any policy, viz. environment, immigration, law & order, international business/trading. Not much there for law-abiding, legal gun owners either.
Current conservative policy lacks substance, it echos as lighter version of liberal policies, even if there are some which may sound different from liberals there’s no guarantee that Conservatives under Scheer would make it their govt. policy.
Watch for yourself what Michelle Rempel has to say about conservative immigration policy. No plans to cut down immigration or TFW, Foreign students, they think the current immigration numbers are sustainable (they may even further increase annual immigration) all they’re talking about is to streamline illegal immigrants/border jumpers:

The dairy lobbyist binder is a scandal, perhaps Maxime learned of this ahead of the convention.
His message on Twitter a couple days before his announcement makes sense now.
On August 21 “MD Smith: “Don’t hold your breath, but last up at one of the breakout sessions is a resolution that suggests the party should phase-out supply management.”
So, party establishment says we’re open to debating SM – BUT, only if we have some time left after everything else.”

Scheer is compromised, and, is looking more authoritarian each week…don’t let his inappropriate grinning fool you, he is following orders.

Canada’s so called “dream team” for NAFTA negotiations needs to be replaced, ineffective and weird…this will cost all Canadians BIGLY!
Manny’s commentary is straight shooting from the hip, I really like this guy.
commented 2018-08-27 20:10:25 -0400
I disagree Ezra… He’s got a year to put it together and he very may-well win but his presence will be known and felt… The next go around

the maximum effect just might take place..
But I wouldn’t discount the man who can put together the largest campaign contributions of all the conservatives he also has a lot of support .. he has a lot of ammunition to work with against the liberals and Justin is just not that popular anymore.
And personally I think it was genius the way he served his resignation… If he would’ve went to the convention they would’ve fired him but he got a chance to leave on his own terms and he took it… Smart man .!
