Did you see the news about Kent Hehr, the Liberal Minister for Sport and Persons with Disabilities?
Hehr is a quadriplegic, and through sheer force of will pushed himself to succeed where others might have given up. Recently he met with people with Thalidomide-induced birth defects. How can you feel anything but sympathy and sorrow for such people?
Yet here's what happened instead:
In response to members of the group reading really heartfelt testimonials, Minister Hehr — apropos of nothing — commented, 'Well you don't have it as bad today as adults as you did when you were kids,'" said Sampson, a human rights lawyer and chair of Thalidomide Survivors Task Group. "Then he went on to say, 'Well you don't have it so bad. Everyone in Canada has a sob story.'
The 122 Thalidomide victims in Canada get government assistance, starting at $25,000 a year.
Not Omar Khadr-level help. Not $10.5 million. But they want more.
And Kent Hehr just called them whiners.
Now, the media did cover this story. And Hehr did not deny the "sob story" remark. He just said he was “misconstrued.” Then after about one day of clucking about it, the media moved on.
Tonight I'll compare and contrast "scandals" from the last government, and this one:
Gerry Ritz's joke during the listeria outbreak, Mike Duffy's expenses, and Bev Oda's $16 orange juice — compare those to Catherine McKenna's $6,000 Paris fashion photography shoot, Maryam Monsef's refugee claims, and of course, Bill Morneau's growing list of problems.
Notice the difference in Media Party "outrage"? Sixteen dollar orange juice? Off with her head. But don't you dare call McKenna "Climate Barbie."
Canada’s politics is sick.
But if you relied on the Media Party for your news, you’d think things have never been better...
