Today I testified before Parliament's Standing Committee on the Access to Information Act, Privacy and Ethics.
I explained that, now that newsrooms are cutting back on staff, the ability journalists have to dig deeper into stories afforded by the Act is more vital than ever.
TheRebel.media, for example, has filed hundreds of ATI requests, not just to government departments but to NGOs and other institutions.
In that way, we've broken many stories the rest of the media ignored.
However, I talked about one particularly shocking example of what happened (or, didn't happen) when we filed a request about the questionnaire that Syrian refugees to Canada were reportedly answering.

Anyway – You truly are the REBEL COMMANDER.
Maybe its changed, but don’t expect better from any Access to Info commission unless it has the power to compel, fine and jail offenders. Even so, it usually shows reverence to the government agency or organizations it has authority (ha ha) over.
He is a good man, and he has important things to say.
My boss was marveling at your ability to dig deep, and reveal what politicians, and their minions, don’t want the public to know.
I applaud you (and your reporters/staff) for going above and beyond in your reporting, or, is it that you all are still actually ‘reporting’ while others aren’t, they are simply script reading for the government. Many of the news stories The Rebel has broken are stories I never see on other news forums, this only serves to confirm to me that actual investigative journalism is a thing of the past – but The Rebel is not afraid to dig in and get dirty, it is not afraid to get the information for us, not afraid if it isn’t politically correct, if it doesn’t make the gov look shiny and/or pisses them off.
I cannot tell you how much I appreciate and RESPECT that! As a Canadian I am proud of you for speaking to this committee on our behalf, and thank you for bringing us the important news that CANADIANS WANT and NEED to hear!! GOOD JOB!
Now lets hope Trudeau squirms b.c whatever IS in there, we are not going to like if he’s trying this hard to hide it. Like the ole saying goes, if you have nothing to hide… why hide it? Sunny ways indeed. Keep digging, we desperately need something to topple this guy and dirty him in public.
The only part I wish you had completed was that when you mentioned Stephen Harper, you didn’t finish by saying that if Harper’s government had pulled this B.S., the liberal (Liberal?) media would have freaked out…it would have been the crime of the century. I believe that on a daily basis more Canadians are beginning to realize that our PM is a vacuous moron.
Ezra.. You are wasting your time, talent and passion as an alt/media reporter.Stand as an indi candidate, get into the house and peel back the layers of deception in this sick system.
Even from the Sun News days, Trudeau has hated you openly and, for good reasons, hates having his feet held to the fire…I’m sure there are miles of footage showing his spiteful behaviour to those who cannot agree with his political views…I hope you have good security protection, as, to this day, I feel that someone under his influence had something to do with closing the Sun news…and that he, and Notley are living in fear of every word you say…you are indeed a very brave man for whom many of us are so grateful…They had better not go too far in trying to silence you as you have an army of truth seekers who depend on you the truth, and who know the hatred of the left for your inquiring legal mind…Good on you for this testimony…well put and NECESSARY to keep on exposing the left’s determination to hide information from Canadian citizens who are also their employers. (even though they believe we are their subjects and they our rulers)
