Forget Earth Hour: Celebrate Human Achievement Hour with The Menzoid

David MenziesMission Specialist

Sorry, says David Menzies, "but partying like it's 1799 isn't just isn't my thing..."

He took to the streets of Toronto to ask ordinary people:

What are mankind's greatest inventions?

And tonight, will they be celebrating Earth Hour (in the dark with the "progressive" Luddites) or Human Achievement Hour like The Menzoid, with lights a-blazing?

Of course, one can celebrate both the Earth and human achievement. Just not with/without lights. Whatever happened to free thought? I’ve never once celebrated earth hour with darkness, symbol of ignorance, but every day, I stand in the full light and love the Earth that nurtures me.

See? Both. Earth hour is like time itself; an artificial construct.

I’ve checked light bulbs to make sure none are burned out so they can all be turned on to celebrate Human Achievement Hour. Also turned on will be my dryer, oven, all fans, all TVs, radios, computers, printers, etc. etc.
Down with living like a Cave Man, even for one hour! Here’s to human intelligence and innovation!

I am turning on so many lights tonight that they will be complaining about the glare up on the space station!!

I think I will shut off my turbine for an hour tonight and use somebody else’s power for a change. Not that it will make any difference on my power bill as I banked from excess power from my solar panels today. No I’m not a global warming freak. I am learning however that wind and solar power will NEVER be the solution to global energy demands.

And He saw the light that it was good and the darkness apprehended it not.

I’m cranking my utility eaters up full blast.

Marjorie Spacek, you have the same memories I do. I thought we were “rich” when we finally got both electricity and a telephone (wall mounted, hand cranked “Hi Martha. Could you please connect me to…” type of telephone, but a telephone none the less). See, the neighbors behind us got electricity but they didn’t get a telephone. And the neighbors down the road from us got a telephone, but they didn’t get electricity. Yup, I thought we must be rich. I’m going to be using every damned appliance I possibly can.

Human Achievement Hour
- Definitely “Man in the street” interviews. Followed closely by bicycle police. Then photography ;)

There were still oil lamps in our parlor when I was a child. They had a metal reflector behind them to try to increase the intensity of the light. Sometimes at Christmas the lamps would be lit to create a “real old-fashioned Christmas.” We sang carols and enjoyed the glow, but then we turned the lights on again. Thank goodness for automatic washing machines—I remember my mother heating water on a wood stove and dipping water out of the tank on the side of the stove on wash day. I remember blocks of ice being delivered in summertime for the ice box. Milk delivered by horse-pulled wagon. Coal on a horse-drawn sloven. You turn off your lights if you wish. Mine will be turned on and are already—in all rooms.

During earth hour, I like to ride my skittles shitting unicorn down the street while holding a flashlight.

Turn on the lights, the appliances, and anything with a plug or “on” button. Hell, even your car. Let’s kick this event off right!

Just to be a true Rebel I’m going to turn every light in my house on for the hour.

And all the people said a Menzies. (Peace be upon him).
