Students at Georgetown College are rejecting criticism of sharia law and calling it hate speech. In fact, they even labeled an Egyptian speaker – who is outspoken against sharia law- as 'Islamophobic'.
According to Campus Reform, “Nonie Darwish, who grew up in Egypt as a Muslim and later fled for the U.S. and Christianity, was invited to speak to the Georgetown University College Republicans (GUCR) group about her latest book.”
Some students denounced the invitation as 'Islamophobic'. In a column in the Georgetown Vice, undergrad student Aly Panjwani claimed inviting Darwish gave a platform to the College Republican's “hateful and violent views.”
“My critique of these speakers is not an effort to silence free speech,” Panjwani claimed. “These speakers are not exercising free speech, they are exercising hate speech, a speech of the kind that no organization, especially at Georgetown, should endorse or give a platform to.”
Yet again the left proves how much they love to censor.
Eventually, a Freshman Representative from the college republicans was driven to resign after dozens of complaints from the Muslim Student Association and other groups. In a Facebook post, Javon Price essentially declared himself a RINO.
“I for one, reject and condemn any organization that hides behind the righteous principles of free speech,” he wrote. “I implore the College Republicans to cancel this event. If not, we not only choose to ignore the voices of our fellow Hoyas, but to maliciously offend them and their beliefs.”
The Georgetown College Democrats obviously loved this, who wrote on Facebook saying, “Islamophobia and bigotry will not be tolerated in any form on Georgetown’s campus, especially not under the guise of conservatism.”
The Darwish event, however, was not canceled. Attendees were, however, approached by students who handed out flyers to an alternative “Muslim Responses to Islamophobia” event along with a handout detailing Darwish's so-called “Islamophobic views”.
