Harper and Sheldon Kennedy: Reorienting our criminal justice system to focus on victims

Brian LilleyArchive

In a week when the story of missing toddler Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette was in the headlines, you would think the media covering the election campaign would eat up a story about crime, getting tough on those that prey on children.

You'd be wrong.

Why cover a story that matters to Canadians when you can claim Stephen Harper is a racist for using the term "old-stock Canadians?"

Sure the same or similar words have been spoken by Justin Trudeau and Stephane Dion and even used by the media to describe Tom Mulcair's family -- but that doesn't matter, they want you to know Harper said something "controversial" to them and their friends on Twitter.

Well, here at The Rebel, we do things differently.

Watch the full chat between Prime Minister Stephen Harper and NHL great-turned-victims-rights-advocate Sheldon Kennedy.

Harper lays out his vision of the criminal justice system, what his government has done to improve things and what they plan on doing in the future including:

* Doubling funding for Child Advocacy Centres and Child and Youth Advocacy Centres which coordinate the investigation, prosecution and treatment of crimes against children.

* Helping existing Centres provide satellite services to communities outside urban centres.

* Funding research on the “invisible” economic and social damage inflicted on victims of crime.

* Passing on a priority basis the “Life Means Life” Act which will ensure Canada’s most heinous offenders receive a life sentence without any chance of parole.

* Passing the Dangerous and Impaired Driving Act which increases penalties for repeat offenders, simplifies the burden of proof for establishing blood alcohol concentration, and speeds up impaired driving related court cases.

How about a legal racket? That is how I would describe the so called justice system in Alberta at least. You have to pay to play or the judge will put you away!

Prince Knight, I’m inclined to call it a Legal Industry.
commented 2015-09-19 19:22:17 -0400
We don’t have a Justice system in Canada — we have a Legal system. It’s no longer about what’s right and wrong, it’s about what’s legal. The victims are paid lip service, at best. Punishment, in the form of incarceration, is so mitigated as to be meaningless.

Canada needs accountable judges. Canada needs applicable punishments. (Cruel and unusual punishment? Shouldn’t the punishment be unusual so as to leave a lasting impression? And who defines “cruel”? (Lack of a tv is cruelty?)) Perhaps we should bring back chain gangs and work camps. Public humiliation perhaps. Then the convicted would stand a better chance of not committing another crime. Perhaps the citizenry be allowed to defend themselves. Then the criminals might think twice about burglary, assault, and robbery.

But don’t expect any support from the “progressives” who believe the criminals are just misunderstood people with personal issues who just need some rehabilitation and a pat on the head…

What are you talking about Nathan W?

Off topic I know. Omar Khadr. I have written by email to the PM and the Conservative Party suggesting a National Referendum be held with the election as to whether Canadians approve or disapprove of the bail conditions being lifted by the Lieberal Judge in Edmonton. I further suggested that should it be found Canadians disapprove, the judge be removed from the bench. An appeal will only inflame the Socialist Media! Better to “think outside the Court Room” and apply some direct democracy. If any Rebels agree, I invite you to do the same thing.

Mr Muzzle is done for.

Soon, common citizens will also be able to access government research. It will not be muzzled when it comes to inconvenient conclusions.

PM Harper is really the only choice for our future, as a democratic country. And I can not fathom Canada going forward, without his steady hand of leadership!

Hey Brinkman if you could get 10.000+ to respond to a poll you wouldn’t have to hang out here idiot.
Gee Gretzky said Harper has been an unreal PM and I totally agree.

My god Brinkman when are you gonna fuck off and go over to the cbc comment section with the rest of your commie people. You are such a little weasel!

“A leader who believes in God, leads the people on the right path.”

Which explains why then left is being pulled along, kicking and screaming like the little children they are.

I rather enjoyed this rare glimpse into some depths of our Prime Minister and to be able to hear from the man himself what ideas, changes and improvements he has made to our country – that I never hear about anywhere else…
As distrustful as I am of politicians in general – and I am – I have been seeing qualities in our PM over the years and months – expressed in actions, not empty words and slogans – that have given me hope that there are in fact ‘a few good men’ still working for us.
I actually stood up and clapped when Sheldon Kennedy’s important contribution was acknowledged.

Look at what Liberal ideology has done in the US pertaining to Criminal Justice.
In the US they now put criminals on pedestals and crucify police officers. This is what we will get with the left

Now Omar Khadr is let loose by yet another woolly headed, dowdy eyed, mindless Liberal judge. Our legal system is in dire need of a complete overhaul. Judges have absolutely no checks on them. They have no level of accountability at all. They could care less about the public safety, and only seem to care about furthering a far left agenda. The system must be made accountable to the people!

I knew someone murdered by a drunk driver and whose friend was crippled by the same drunk driving with a suspended license. Of course, the drunk driver was a 5th cousin 6 times removed from one whose grand father was in a residential school, so received the appropriate sentence for the murder.

Joan, I am not positive what you are saying, but my reference was to an earlier comment in another article where we were mutually admiring the beauty of the Norwegian woman “tall, blonde, and blue eyed.” You weren’t thinking there was anything gay in my comment, were you, Joan?

Vlad, if the NDP get into office, we should jump on a plane and head to Norway.

Completely agree with you Vlad. Every word.

Tired of the suicidal socialists/communists that make more noise than their numbers in order to financially train wreck a nation.

Prime Minister Harper turned a newly created party to the naturally governing party and did it in a few years in the face of two opposing parties and a dozen socialist attack dog media outlets.

This is a first in Canada and a first in the world. Canada is extremely lucky to have such a leader as their PM.
commented 2015-09-18 18:27:41 -0400
What a great PM Harper is. We are so lucky to have him.
commented 2015-09-18 18:03:57 -0400
Brinkman – I take it from your post that you think Khadr is a greater victim than the girls whose labias are routinely cut off and whose vaginas are sewn shut. Am I right?
commented 2015-09-18 18:02:13 -0400
I would be happy if police and Crown lawyers would enforce the law to protect victims and apprehend criminals, as the PSA directs them, instead of what they too often do which is to mock, threaten and harass victims to try to shut them up.

For every Sheldon Kennedy and Theo Fleury and Mr. Womback with their high public profiles, are literally thousands of victims silenced by police and the Crown including corrupt judges.

Conservative legislation is great but does nothing when police and the Crown refuse to enforce it.

I fail to understand this controversy involving “old stock” Canadians. I guess I can consider myself old stock since I have native ancestry on my mother’s side and my great-great grandfather on my Dad’s side came to this country in about 1850 as a ship’s carpenter with the Hudson’s Bay Company. You could probably apply that term to an Asian Canadian whose Japanese or Chinese ancestors came to BC a little over one hundred years ago or a black Nova Scotian who is most likely descended from former slaves who migrated there from the United States or Jamaica more than two hundred years ago. Using either “new” or “old” stock, therefore, should not suggest any sort of racial or ethnic connotations. So, it must really be the left who are being the racists concerning this or other related instances.

“Internet Trolls have the CBC and Toronto Star web sites to leave comments on.”

And it would be real nice if they went there … permanently.

Perhaps The Rebel staff know that the majority of followers agree with Ezra and nothing more needs to be said. Internet Trolls have the CBC and Toronto Star web sites to leave comments on.

Richard, you are so disingenuous because for EVERY petition article posted by theRebel there has never been any comments allowed on any of them, not just this one. There is no stifling of freedom of speech here because other articles are posted with exactly the same issue as the petition page that you can comment upon.

So please, Richard, stop this lying. Please? I am asking you to be honest.

Demand that the government put Khadr back in jail! posted by Ezra Levant found here-

Sadly the comment forum was turned off by Ezra and The Rebel Media preventing free speech and freedom of the Press to respond to Ezra’s newest project against the Canadian Omar Khadr. So with all due respect to Rebels and all Canadians who love freedom of speech and freedom of the press I will post this YouTube playlist that no other Corporate News Media Party has in Canada – It’s titled Omar Khadr The Man, The Law -YouTube Playlist:

In past The Rebel Media have used my YouTubes on Khadr to for thier stories and respectfully gave me credit. In light of this
please ask Ezra Levant to RESPECTFULLY open the comments forum on “Demand that the government put Khadr back in jail!” so that everyone here on Rebel has a chance to share thier ideas and thoughts freely.
