A study of six million births published in April in the Canadian Medical Journal shows a preference for boys among Indian-born parents. This gender preference has contributed to more than 4,400 missing female births.
This greater presence of boys among Indian-born mothers may be linked to abortions during the second trimester after parents have learned the sex of their babies.
This prompted Ontario Liberal Minister of Health, Dr. Eric Hoskins, to speak out.
“No health-care provider, including physicians, should, in any circumstances, be providing or supporting individuals or families that are attempting to determine the sex of their child in order to secure a sex-selective abortion,” ...
“This is an issue of gender equality and equity and (the behaviour) has no place in Canada, let alone in Ontario.”
I totally agree.
But how do the “safe, legal and on-demand” pro-abortion feminists square this circle? They can't have it both ways though they'll certainly try.
Feminists will tell you a fetus isn’t a baby and it’s always the mom’s choice to carry the baby to term, or not and for any reason. Do they still support the mom’s choice to not have that baby for actual sexist reasons?
This puts pro-choicers in a bit of an ideological pretzel.
Isn’t it ironic that the very people who advocate for women’s only safe spaces are making it easy for the uterus to be a male-only space?
So I guess the answer would be push the reset button and start all over again..

If a woman wants to abort her disabled fetus, then does that make her anti disabled? I would think not.

We didn’t do sex selective abortions here until it was imported and all rules were stripped to make for no abortion restrictions.
In 1969 the government allowed abortion under certain circumstances. ‘Abortions may be performed in a hospital if a committee of doctors (3) decides that continuing the pregnancy may endanger the mother’s life or health.’ This was quite a broad definition and included mental health, rape, a woman’s circumstance. It was pretty much left up to a doctor’s discretion. I had no problem with that, it seemed to accommodate the needs of the woman while still having some restrictions to abortion.
Certain restrictions meant, no late term abortions unless absolutely medically necessary to save the life of the mother. It was considered dangerous for women to have them. Gender selection was considered an unacceptable reason for abortion, although it rarely came up in Canada. It became more frequently requested from women who immigrated to Canada from India, China, Korea, Vietnam and Philippines.
Lester Pearson was in when it first started, but ironically it was Pierre Trudeau in power in 69 when the initial law was implemented, leaving the decision between a woman and her doctor, but with some restrictions.
In 1988 the 1969 abortion law was struck down, and now you have a free for all.
