When Prime Minister Trudeau completed his first cabinet shuffle earlier this year, two veteran Liberal MP’s, were “retired” from cabinet and appointed ambassadors abroad, John McCallum to China and Stephan Dion to Germany and the European Union. But that’s not all these two were given.
As a send off from their pals in the Liberal Party, in addition to the ambassadorships and the elite benefits that come with those positions, both were also given special advisory positions to the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, Chrystia Freeland.
And those special advisory positions come with a salary just shy of a cool quarter million.
Cabinet signed off on two Orders in Council to create these highly unusual positions. Neither I nor any of my Ottawa sources, have ever seen ambassadors given a special advisory position on top of their regular ambassadorship, and it’s not just The Rebel who noticed this either.
Watch as I explain why this is so unusual, who else has noticed and share with you the results of the access to information filing we submitted in an attempt to find out more about these advisory positions.
At this point, it appears the Liberals have literally just made up these positions that don’t seem to be real or have any expectation of what work will be done.
But as we speak, both Dion and McCallum are collecting paycheques for their $200K+ salaries while hundreds of thousands of Canadians suffer from job losses in the energy sector, and many thousands more face ever increasing taxes and smaller take home pay as a result.
I thought Trudeau was fighting for the middle class? The middle class that at the time he took power was actually the wealthiest in the world thanks to the previous conservative government.
It appears the cronyism Liberals love is alive and well again in Ottawa.
