Hillary Clinton came out against the Keystone XL Pipeline this week.
In her explanatory tweet, she referred to "North America's dirtiest fuel".
This is strange considering that her own State Department repeatedly approved the pipeline after extensive reviews.
And while it's true that oilsands oil takes more energy to produce than Saudi oil, it isn't "dirty" when it burns in your tank.
When it comes to production, viscous California oil and heavy Venezuelan oil which also comes from a regime that is hostile to the U.S., bring their own challenges so why wouldn't she prefer Ethical Oil?
But all this talk about how oil is produced is just a distraction since Clinton's never shown herself to be overly concerned with this issue before.
It's more likely that this is a sign of desperation since her main rival in the race for the Democratic nomination, Bernie Sanders, has moved from being a minor irritant to becoming a real threat. Add Joe Biden to the race and things aren't looking good for Clinton.
If she were to stay silent on Keystone XL, she'd lose votes and money from environmental groups and activists.
Either way, when trying to understand the Clintons, you'll notice it's always about what's best for them and not what's best for America.
