The Gunn Show: How Calgary conservatives plan to take back municipal politics

Sheila Gunn ReidRebel Host | The Gunn Show

For the better part of half a century, conservatives have watched while progressives have carefully organized themselves to support left wing politicians at all levels of government.

While conservatives were busy building boring think tanks that no one knew about and talking about grand ideas, the left was infiltrating school boards, town councils and the civil service — all backed by their deep pocketed friends in the labour and environmental movements.

Tonight, I bring you the story of what can happen when conservatives finally start to organize and throw a little dough at some old fashioned grass roots activism.

I’m joined by Hadyn Place from Save Calgary, a conservative organization targeting progressive politicians at the municipal level that have reached their past due date.

We’re talking about why municipal politics matter and how conservatives can start to win again when we start showing up for the fight.

So Shelia, What happened? I’m voting UCP in 2019, but after Pizza and tax eating Nenshi got re-elected here….. should cons be worried? Or did Bill Smith lose because of other issues (flames arena and whatnot)?

CANADIAN MONGREL commented, “Four pieces of legislation to deal with third party campaigning? I wonder how much these pieces of legislation curb public union campaigning? I seem to recall, not at all.” I would like to see legislation introduced that would require an account of campaign funding be provided before, not after elections.

‘Technology’ is great when they use it, and they usually use it to bait and spread misinformation, but when Conservatives us technology ( to remind people of the facts) they are threatened and want to change the campaign rules.

Hadyn Place is so right, inform yourselves and vote at all levels. People often ignore School Board and Mayoral elections. Big mistake, you have to watch these local politicians.

This ties in with the David Menzies story on chopping down the totem pole at a York Regional school. School boards spend a lot of our tax dollars and have tremendous influence over the way our children are raised.(Unfortunately). The judgement of the members of this school board is obviously wanting and I can just imagine the lack of wisdom regarding the rest of their agenda.
Wynne launched her political career as a school board member and just look at the political monster that created.
We need to concentrate on electing strong conservatives to all these school boards and municipal councils. All politics is local and it is the only way to turn things around.

What will be interesting is that if the school board swings right, like Mr. Place says is a possibility, how long Eggan will let it operate before disbanding it and replacing it with an Official Trustee appointed by him. Actually, if Council becomes conservative, how long before the Non-Democratic Government starts disallowing Council’s legislation.

Definitely a true mid-term election in Alberta, which I think is even happening rurally. Too bad about Edmonton being behind the times with the dinosaurs.

Again, compliments on your interview style Ms. G-R.

Laughable when “useful idiot” trolls deem to give conservatives advice. Like taking advice from Notley or Trudeau or Karl Marx. Good comic relief though.

How can conservatives take back anything? Simple answer is, stop being “conservative”. That’s usually their problem, they can only win when they go for the centre.

Heres to a conservative wave that will vote out the lefties in both municipal and provincial politics in Alberta. Perhaps the last few years of Notley / Nenshi will be an inoculation shot that will right the ship in Alberta for the next 30 years. In 30 years a conservative government will again slide so far to the left the public punishes them by voting for the OSP, the Old Socialist Party – formerly called the New Democratic Party. Sorry for Albertans who have to live through these things.

Great show Sheila. Canadians have to get active and take our institutions back from the degenerate left rot that infects them.
