Hypocrite Catherine McKenna orders taxpayer funded shuttle bus service

Ezra LevantRebel Commander

On last night's episode of The Ezra Levant Show, Guest-host David Menzies and The Rebel's Sheila Gunn Reid discussed Environment Minister Catherine McKenna's latest waste of your tax dollars.

According to a federal government request for tender, Environment and Climate Change Canada and the National Capital Region requires the services of shuttle bus drivers to transport Environment and Climate Change Canada and other federal government employees to and from their respective offices using Environment Canada supplied vehicles.

Two shuttles will be operating for nine and a half hours per day on an ongoing basis. One van and one larger 15 passenger van. Fuel will be paid by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The government says they want these vans to run every 10 minutes between two Gatineau addresses. That's every 10 minutes whether there are people in them or not. Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth all day long - for 251 days per year.

Sign our petition and tell Catherine McKenna to stop to her carbon-intensive shuttle bus program and lead the way by asking her employees to ride their bikes, walk or take the bus to and from their offices.

Wow, who needs a shuttle that runs every ten minutes? Haven’t these people heard of using technology to communicate with each other! Or, running a shuttle am and pm – book your meetings accordingly…don’t like this option then walk, bike or take public transit.

Alberta Maga….please explain what experience you have that validates your opinion. How is a shuttle that costs less and has less carbon footprint than numerous taxis is hypocrisy?

Marian Eagen this is not bashing , they are not needed and it is hypocrisy. Government workers are spoiled and underworked.

If you are going to report this story, you owe it to your readers to report all the facts. Federal government employees are not entitled to paid transportation from their homes to work or visa versa. Shuttles are intended to reduce the cost of taxis/mileage/parking costs (and carbon footprint) for employees who are required to attend business meetings at a location other than their regular place of business. (The relocation of half the government offices to Quebec in the 70’s is another story entirely.) This was actually tried by my department during my tenure with the federal government. It was not popular with employees and particularly executives, who were arriving to important business meetings on the equivalent of a school bus while other attendees from unions and private industry arrived by private chauffeur, or taxi at a minimum. That said, everyone I knew put up with the inconvenience to save the taxpayer money. Having spent 18 years in the oil industry and high tech, and the same amount of time as a federal public servant (now retired), I feel qualified to tell you that my experience as a senior manager in the federal government was lower pay for more responsibility, infinitely fewer perks (conferences, travel, bonuses etc.) The upside: greater job security (probably no longer the case) and generous pensions (for which you were docked a large portion of your salary.) I have nothing to do with mckenna or any political party. I just get fed up with government employee-bashing when my experience leads me to believe it is entirely unjustified.

Ride your bikes or walk like you want the rest of us to do.

Poor Barbie… She probably took the advice of the same twit that talked her into posing for the absurd “bicycle in high heels” shot…
