All right, I've complained enough about the cuckiness of the right. Time for the left to take their lumps.
Where to begin?
How about with the realization that "Wealthy populist entertainer/capitalist becomes President and imposes fascism" has been a staple of leftist anxiety for at least a century and has shown up in innumerable bits of propaganda, everything from Citizen Kane to Infinite Jest, and when the real thing showed up, all of the art house's warnings proved utterly useless?
Or perhaps we could mock them for having had the perfect counterpart to Trump right in front of their faces, the “Henry Drummond” to Trump's “Matthew Harrison Brady,” and when push came to shove, they went with the living embodiment of slimy Beltway politics over the earnest outsider Bernie Sanders.
I respect my pal Dave's analysis of the situation, but I can't see a way Trump loses under the existing dynamic. Trump's supporters and whichever establishment Republicans decide to get over themselves and back him are motivated to destroy Clinton, whereas Democrats find her loathsome at worst and tolerable at best. Even if they view Trump as the living embodiment of evil, Clinton isn't the dragon slayer they want or need.
But the biggest reason to laugh at the left is that this isn't just an existential crisis for the Republicans -- it's a do or die moment for them, too.
If Trump wins this thing, he will have demonstrated to every conservative on the planet that progress really is a lie.
Never again will they be stopped by accusations of sexism, racism, transphobia, and the like.
Never again will they confine themselves to complaining on social media about the dark powers of "political correctness."
Winning is a simple matter of refusing to be shamed. Refusing to compromise. Imposing your will. Dealing from strength. So-called progress is no protection against demagoguery. That's what a Trump victory means.
And the most ironic thing is:
If the left really believed in helping those in need, this would never have happened.
For -- and this is the most mindblowing thing for me, at least -- the left knows that Trump is wounded and insecure. He is the product of a loveless environment where showing weakness meant being punished and where losing meant you were inadequate as a human being.
And if Trump were not a wealthy white capitalist, they would be falling over themselves to care for him, to diagnose him, to blame root causes and to blame systemic this or internalized that for what he does. They would be treating him the way they treat Kanye West.
So why don’t they give Trump the hug he needs? Because their ideology is ultimately based on HATE. Hate for the so-called “privileged.”
Can it be called a privileged existence to want to stamp your name on everything above street level?
Would a privileged man constantly demean others to make himself seem bigger? Would he take insults about the length of his fingers personally?
It's patently obvious to me that Donald Trump is living in a comfortable hell and that his run for Presidency is based on a desire to get back at everyone who has hurt him.
Destroying his perceived enemies won't make him happy or give him back what he's lost. The left -- who claim to be all about love and social justice -- appear to have collectively missed that.
