A Muslim immigrant in the UK illegally has been jailed for life after he poured white spirit on his wife while they were decorating and then set her on fire, killing her.
30-year-old Muhammed Hammad carried out the brutal attack on his wife, Nazia Akhtar, after an argument in their Birmingham home on April 25 of last year.
Akhtar had threatened to leave her husband because of his 'controlling ways'.
She also claimed that the Pakistani-born Hammad had only married her to get a British visa.
In an attempt to cover up the attack, Hammand set himself on fire too to try to make the attack look like an accident.

Akhtar, who suffered serious burns, was able to wake up from a coma and tell investigators what had happened before she died.
Detective Inspector Justin Spanner, from West Midlands Police, said “This was an unusual investigation where the victim, Nazia Akhtar, awoke from a coma and was able to give us an account of the circumstances leading to her sustaining her injuries.”
Her account was played for a jury.
Hammad was sentenced to life in prison and will serve a minimum of 25 years.
