We’ve recently discovered that Melbourne University has been giving students workshops on white male privilege, wherein male students have been told to act more like women and cut down on Australian banter in case they offend non-Australian students in the classroom.
This is despite the fact that there are more women on Australian campuses than men. And despite the fact that record numbers of international students are choosing to study in Australia.
Why is Australia going down this path?
Not only is it racist and sexist, it’s extraordinarily dumb.
And it is not fitting of institutions of higher learning, where students and professors should be there according to merit and not their identity group.
Thankfully Australian universities are not at this point yet, and I don’t think they ever will be.
But if we continue to hold workshops on white male privilege and if we start handing out awards to students for their political activism, then we just might.
