INTERVIEW: Bernier, Tyler Thompson discuss all-important Burnaby South by-election

David MenziesMission Specialist

Monday, February 25 is Election Day in Burnaby South. And it’s a significant by-election to be sure.

For starters, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh is hoping to finally win a seat. Meanwhile, this by-election also serves as the first true test for the brand new People’s Party of Canada.

In this interview, I check in to see how the battle is going with PPC Leader Maxime Bernier, and the PPC candidate hoping to win Burnaby South, Laura-Lynn Tyler Thompson.

Do not despise the day of small beginnings! The PPC is unstoppable. We are united and ready to stand. The one thing I learned is that hope is lost in Canada. Poor voter turn out, corruption in high places. As they are learning about us, hope is coming alive. #BernierNation #PPC

2/ As @LauraLynnTT said last night, babies start walking at 8 months and our party was born only 5 months ago!

We must continue to grow at the same breakneck speed until October.

This is only the beginning of our journey. We are in it for the long haul.

3/ We are addressing crucial issues the other parties won’t touch.

We have the clearest principles and the best platform.

There is no alternative.

CANADA NEEDS US.

Let’s work even harder now to find the best candidates and be ready for the general election.

Glenn Craig,

That would be a silly amendment. Most people don’t vote. Even in the American Presidential election, so every vote should be counted for those that care to vote, especially in a country with a small population like Canada.

Besides, even if everyone in BC voted, it wouldn’t change the results with having Bernier’s party winning. It just would be a much bigger loss to them.

Life is obviously so great that the people in these ridings didn’t feel compelled to contribute their time to support the very reason that life is great.”

Life is great because of the free expression of democracy, which is what we saw last night.

You’re right, life is pretty great for most Canadians right now.

LLTT appears to have been popular among Chinese evangelicals, not because of some surge on Bernier’s’ behalf.

:There are a few things I could say about this. One being that predictions of the PPC “splitting the vote and the Liberals (who would otherwise be defeated) will come right up the middle” is nonsense. "

No? The conservative vote was very split in Burnaby. If the Libs had been slightly stronger, and the NDP slightly weaker, a single Conservative could have indeed slipped up the middle – had he not himself been split.

It didn’t happen here, but a third of Canadian ridings are suburban swings like this one.

liza Rosie,

Fair enough to only support those candidates that tell you the things you want to hear, but then you also have to accept that those candidates may never win and the politicians you hate will win or be re-elected.
commented 2019-02-26 09:19:00 -0500
I would propose an amendment to the elecions act whereby if voter turnout is below a certain threshold the election is forfeit and the seat remains vacant until the following gereral election.

Outremont 21.38% voted.
York/Simcoe 19.91% voted.
Burnaby South 29.89% voted.

There are a few things I could say about this. One being that predictions of the PPC “splitting the vote and the Liberals (who would otherwise be defeated) will come right up the middle” is nonsense.

The second is….I WOULD ATRIBUTE THE VOTER APATHY IN LARGE PART TO POLLS..
Which is why they should be banned. Were the results anything like the previous polls? If not why not. They serve no usefull purpose and they throw a wet blanket on voter participation.

Unfortunately , those of us that do care will suffer the same consequences for their lack of exercising their civic responsibility.

Outremont 21.38% voted.
York/Simcoe 19.91% voted.
Burnaby South 29.89% voted.

Is that the lowest turnout for Federal byelections in Canadian history?
Part of having a healthy democracy is having a population that is informed and aware. The population is nether.
The vast majority of eligible voters in all three districts did not even care to vote. Quebecers voted for the criminal Libs with the Green party in second place and the Bloc a close third. Ontarions voted Conservative to retain status quo with the Libs in second. And BC votes for the joke of the NDP with the Libs in second; the Lib candidate who said he wanted the UN to regulate the Canadian internet.

Well folks, you can’t fix stupid. Canada? That was just a dream some of us had.

Beam me up Scotty. There ain’t no intelligent life down here.

Jagmeet Singh is allied with Kalistani militant groups in India. Looks like the people of Burnaby South want their hard earned tax dollars redirected to support Punjabi terrorism instead of being spent on their own communities.

Canadians who have absolutely NO clue about who they are voting for should consider the welfare of their fellow Canadians and restrain from voting in elections.

I’m not voting for shit anymore. I’m tired of shit. When you vote for shit all you get is shit. There is no point to it unless you like eating shit. I have eaten all the shit I am ever going to eat. Done with voting for shit. Scheer can take a flying leap for all I care.

liza Rosie,

I think you are going to realize that you supported a loser – when you could have voted for Scheer and then you will complain for 4 more years about Trudeau.

Oh really John Wick…

Well I live in a slam dunk Liberal riding and I still know that not all ridings are slam dunk liberal

Leftists now have a choice…Jagmeet Singh or Embarra Singh…just look at Justin Trudeau’s pathetic audition for Bollywood and tell me it is not Embarra Singh…not to mention old issues about ….Oh never mind.

I’m still voting PPC.

If the People’s Party can’t even beat the NDP, there is no way that Maxime will EVER be PM. He is fringe. The fight is between Trudeau and Scheer.

These By elections show two very significant things and they are why I took such risk as to support the PPC….

First…one of the benefits of being a PPC member/supporter…is that a conservative victory is never a total defeat….;-)

Second is…The bullshit narative that the PPC “split the vote so that liberals come up the middle”….is completely belied….the PPC are simply a repository of VALUES….

The vote could never be “split” to the point that some would wish…some might call the PPC a princpled rump…yeah….what’s your point?
commented 2019-02-25 22:26:21 -0500
..but there are only 40 out of 170 polls in. Libs in the lead at this point. Big lead.

I’ve worked Federal Elections which I believe have consistent rules. (WELL FOR NOW) across Canada.
As voters arrive and vote, they are crossed off the master list at each polling station . Each poll has scrutineers from each party who then scrutinize who has voted and that is released to the campaigns.
This allows the campaigns to get out the vote by calling their list of remaining eligible voters who have indicated they will vote for that candidate. You can then call, arrange rides ,called the ground game.
Who people vote for isn’t known until polls closed, votes are counted.
That’s the way it works , and it ain’t over till it’s over…
