It's all political theatre as the Mike Duffy trial continues in Ottawa

Brian LilleyArchive

Jail time over residency requirements? Not likely.

It was a media circus again today at the Duffy trial with the jostling getting so bad a cameraman got knocked off his feet. Even worse were all the reporters repeatedly putting their political questions to a criminal lawyer who can't answer them. It's becoming more obvious that the public is being misled by a political media that is covering a criminal trial as if it were political theatre.

Another aspect of the Duffy trial is the politicization of the judiciary. Why does the judge allow these fishing expeditions for all members of Prime Minister’s staff when it is Mike Duffy who is on trial? Is it a crime to act to have someone pay back (or have knowledge of attempts to pay back) improperly claimed expenses to the taxpayer? No of course not. The CBC just covers it as if it were so. All the reporting a commentary assumes that Harper is guilty of something even though he is not even on trial. This is not news reporting, it is news filtering. The CBC message is always that Harper, is bad, guilty, in trouble or all three no matter what happens in the news.

Adscam and the Gomery report amounted to $75 million. That’s a far cry from $90000

Jimmy the AdScam scandal was a real crime involving the theft of millions of dollars of taxpayers money that involved the Prime Minister Jean Chretien. This is a non-crime of Nigel Wright lending Senator Mike Duffy $90,000. The two are in no way comparable. Jean Chretien was acquitted by a judge who he appointed. The media is harping (or Harpering) on the story all the time so that people will think that there is actually something wrong being done. The real wrong that is being done is the misleading media coverage of a phony news story which is intended to influence an election.

Why don’t Stephen Harper’s own words apply to himself?

Re: “PM denies knowledge of payment to Duffy,” May 23.

Stephen Harper quote:

“At worst, he personally ordered it done and chose the people who executed the plan. At the very least, he fostered an attitude within the party…, chose the managers of the people who committed these crimes and completely and utterly failed to exercise any oversight, supervision or leadership.

“In the end, it doesn’t really matter where [his] actions or lack of them fall on that scale. He is the leader and a leader is responsible for the actions of the people he leads.

“If he had a right or honourable bone in his body, he’d admit that and resign immediately.”

That’s Stephen Harper on Jean Chrétien and the AdScam scandal.

So Harper should resign, which of course he won’t and thus is hypocritical.

So sick of this whole secondary campaign against Mr Harper! Where is the coverage about Mac Harb who swindled much more money from taxpayers???? Really, really fed up with the ganging up on Conservatives. It’s so phony! And I even have friends who believe this garbage….

“How are Canadians tolerating this.”

They have no choice. The main stream media is going to do whatever the hell they want to do. We can only hope that the majority of Canadians will see through the MSM bovine excrement.

Nigel Wright personally gave Mike Duffy $90,000 with his own free will. THATS IT. THERE IS NO STORY HERE. Brian Lilley is soooooooo right when he calls it “A Political Theater”. MSM is trying so hard to make a story out of nothing. How are Canadians tolerating this. Charlie Angus owes Prime Minister a huge apology. Mulcair spent most of his time, as the country’s official opposition leader, pressing this non issue. This makes him the worst opposition leader in Canadian political history. MSM is trying to fabricate stories. Why don’t they talk about Mulcair being a citizen of Franc? . Why don’t they expose Suzuki as a tax cheat and a pedophile? Why don’t they talk about Suzuki’s debate in Australia and how ridiculous he looked there? KILL THE CBC! KILL THE CBC!

Wayne said, “Good thing we have the Rebel media.”

Now if we can get the people here to see this! Just think what theRebel could do with the CBC’s $1 billion dollar budget!

The mainstream media coverage of this trial is designed to influence the election. Is it against the law to lend money to a friend? – No. Is it against the law to know that someone lent money to a friend. – No. Is the Prime Minister responsible for the expense accounts of the senators that he appoints? No.
Yet that is what the media want you to think is so terrible. Not only do we have daily TV coverage of these non-crimes we also have mainstream media commentators daily opining that this is so terrible and damaging to Mr. Harper. Media neutrality this is not!
Remember when Jean Chretien the prime minister, himself, was on trial on charges of corruption? Did we get daily TV coverage of the trial. No. When Chretien was acquitted by a judge whom he had appointed did we get any TV coverage or commentators saying anything negative? No.
You probably do not remember it because it was buried on the back pages.

Good thing we have the Rebel media.

Joseph Bleau – Exactly.

Mike Duffy was a conservative journalist and therefore a heretic who his former colleagues want to make an example of in order to intimidate others. When the judge dismisses this case the pitch forkers will accuse him of being a Tory hack.

This circus should be hitting the news around the world! I has to be the first time that an executive working in the highest speres of a Government, is put on the stand and grilled for days to explain why he dared give an important amount of his money to the Governement! We usually see swindlers on the stand who took used their positions of power to pad their wallets, not the other way around.

The ironic thing I see in Brian Lilley’s unbiased report is at the 14 second mark….. a Port-a-potti truck is seen on the road driving by. Is it just a load of MSM crap being delivered or taken away??? The MSM are like a bunch of Piranha in a feeding frenzy over nothing. I guess they have to justify their existence!
commented 2015-08-14 19:49:50 -0400
Can’t say I understand all the kerfluffle over this. The Conservatives work to resolve an issue involving Conservatives and no public money (read taxes) are involved. The Socialist Media is in a frenzy. Had this been a Lieberal Gov’t, they would have had no reservations about using public money to correct the situation, if they even bothered, and it is a given the Socialist Media would ignore the story as they are doing now with Mac Harb. As for “even bothered”? One only needs look at ADSCAM to interpret the Lieberal view. Apparently the No Democracy Party shares the same view with the tax dollars they took for partisan purposes! Tax dollars and wages earned by Canadian belong to them (Lieberals) don’t you know? Marc Lalonde, a finance minister in the Gov’t of PET stated this in the House Of Commons in the seventies. No Lieberal ever since has retracted this position! One thinks the Dippers hold the same belief!

So answer me this Batman. Has there been any reporting from national media sources that broadcast news that have talked about the misuse or better yet the misappropriation of funds that the NDP used and never paid back as per the direct order from the House of Commons Internal Board of Economy? The NDP has refused and lost appeals on this matter. Why were they then allowed to remain in the house while they flagrantly abused the privileges of their expenses on the taxpayers back? Why has the media hardly ever talked about this? I covered the story in student run news room back in the spring. It never even made that nights newscast on any major dinner hour or late night telecast from publicly funded newscasters. I think we know where their editorial mandate lies. All the more reason to have an government investigation on how they spend their money and how they go about their business

Just go to show you the bias of MSM. It is virtually impossible to get any real news from them The feeding frenzy over the Duffy trial, trying to get anything on Harper. Duffy is a greedy little porker who got his hand caught in the cookie jar. I hope he gets what he deserves. Does not shake my faith in Harper. Harper all the way.

just saw this “off topic” – troodo ad – so the wealthy can pay more tax – LMFAO!!! just a fkg stupid guy.

Hitler had similar beliefs:
Initially, Nazi political strategy focused on anti-big business, anti-bourgeois (modern day “tax the rich”), and anti-capitalist rhetoric, although such aspects were later downplayed in order to gain the support of industrial entities, and in the 1930s the party’s focus shifted to anti-Semitic themes

Well Brian, Duffy mis-spent, but it was paid back.

This liberal senator did not pay it back and went to jail. I’m sure you’ve heard of Raymond Lavigne.

On May 10, 2011, Lavigne was sentenced to six months in prison with an additional, consecutive six month conditional sentence to be served at home.11 Lavigne appealed both his convictions and sentences, but his appeals were rejected. He began serving his sentence in June, 2013.16

Someone should be keeping track of all the stories that are anti Harper. Here are some of today’s stories:
“Stephen Harper zings Manitoba’s NDP government during Winnipeg campaign stop”
“Harper’s fight for Alberta betrays a worried Conservative Party”
Stephen Harper defends chief of staff Ray Novak in Duffy scandal
Stephen Harper’s trip to the North met with mixed reaction
NDP lead continues to hold across Canada

Gee, I wonder if they would be interested in Hillary Clinton’s email server as much as they’ve been interested in this $90,000 cheque that Nigel Wright cut out of his own funds (probably only if her name was Bush or Palin instead of Clinton)?

This “trial” should have been over months ago. Anything to hammer the Conservatives…

We should be kind and spare a thought for Graham Richardson, that poor CTV reporter who, it appears, drew the short straw and was earlier assigned to stand outside the courthouse and give us the latest news regarding the Trial Of The Century. His efforts at trying to make a scandalous story out of nothing was almost hilarious. His faltering speech pattern, as he stuttered and stammered trying frantically to structure a sentence with damning words that would somehow justify the news media’s induced hype for this event, was like something out of a Monty Python sketch. Lisa Laflamme glaring and scowling at his failure to coherently come up with something that would taint Prime Minister Harper just made the whole thing even funnier.

What’s so stupid about their antics is that even a twelve year old kid blowing bubble gum is quite well aware of the notion that it simply involved very poor judgement on the part of Nigel Wright and that as the audit of the Senate continued on, more nonsense was discovered regardless of political stripe that made Duffy-Wright no better or worse in comparison. Looking at Three Hundred and Eight’s website, the poll numbers coming out basically still have the election at a neck and neck pace with the Tories having a slight edge in some surveys and the NDP in others. As if most people are really on the edge of their seats like the Media Party seems to be over this, most likely at their cottages caring about more important matters.
