Late last month, Empire actor Jussie Smollett reported that he’d been assaulted on the streets of Chicago by two white male Trump supporters. The story went viral, with many declaring that Smollett, who is gay and African-American, had obviously been the victim of a hate crime.
But from the beginning, the actor’s story seemed bizarre. What was he, let alone his two assailants, doing outside at night during a polar vortex, which saw temperatures in Chicago reach such record low temperatures that authorities were warning everyone to stay inside?
Even putting aside the arctic temperatures, why would two men be wandering the streets armed with bleach and a noose? How did they recognize Smollett as the star of the show Empire, let alone as black or gay, if (presumably) he was bundled up to ward off the cold?
Recently, some residents in the area told the NYPost that they didn’t believe Smollett was attacked at all, and explained why.
