Katie Hopkins: Home schooling rises in Wales — the reason shocked me

Katie HopkinsShillman Fellow

Something strange is going on in British schools. The number of children being withdrawn and home schooled has leapt by 40 per cent in the last three years.

In Wales, the trend is more startling.

Wales is the worst in the U.K. in terms of education. I came here to find out what’s going on — and what I discovered surprised me...

Why not be specific? What do you consider inaccurate, since you have first hand experience. School us then.

I pay my Rebel subscription and that’s not particularly cheap.
But I feel I’m getting poor value for money when I see such facile and inaccurate journalism here. If KH is so wide of the mark when commenting on things I know about first-hand, what am I or anyone else supposed to make of her comments on other topics?

“We really expect better standards from the Rebel.”
Cheap shot.
I thought Katie presented a fair report.

As far a language is concerned, here all government dealings are offered in French and/or English. Although my French is very bad, it is a part of our identity. Two languages, two solitude’s, and I would like to see it stay that way. I never want an addition of any other language being included because that would be very un Canadian. There may be exceptions as with a Downs affected child but

I can understand the Welsh wanting to hang on to their identity. If you don’t keep your culture strong you get politicians with global intentions forcing things onto your country you may not want. Too much diversity does nothing but water down a country and a people. Its good to think about these things, especially in light of the global agenda to homogenise the western world.

I didn’t send my kids to the indoctrination centres they call the public school system, 30 years ago, and I encourage anyone who is able to keep their kids out to do it. Especially with the advent of the internet. I relied on second hand book stores for text books, libraries and snail mail contact to organize gatherings with other home-schooler moms in my province in Canada. It is a very daunting endeavor. Much easier to just send the kid to school. Parents don’t take the step unless they are serious and are going to be dedicated. Its a big responsibility. I don’t think anyone takes the decision lightly or does it for any kind of ‘status’.

Take it from a long-standing Rebel supporter who also happens to speak Welsh – KH has got this completely wrong, and is attacking quite the wrong target.

It is perfectly true that the Welsh education system is on a downward trend relative to the rest of the UK – the reason is that since Devolution in the 1990s the country has been run by the Labour Party, who are running down pretty much every aspect of the country including its health service and the wider economy. If she’d stuck to that point then she’d have been on the right track.

As for Welsh-language schools, though, historically Labour have been fiercely opposed to the Welsh language, and the growth of Welsh-language schooling since the 1950s – which was and still is driven by popular demand – has been in spite of them rather than because of them. Until fairly recently the Welsh-language schools performed significantly better academically than English-language ones, possibly because they were the product of determined lobbying by highly-engaged (and it must be said, mainly middle-class) parents.

What’s happened more recently is that Labour has become a convert to the cause of Welsh-language schooling, mainly to stave off what it sees as a Nationalist challenge to its hegemony, and so has become much more involved: in the process, pushing the standards of Welsh-language schooling down to the standards of the English-language schools. The most recent statistics show that the average performance of Welsh and English schools in Wales is pretty much identical to one another, but lower than comparable schools elsewhere in the UK.

But why on earth should the use of Welsh in Welsh schools be at all controversial? KH doesn’t complain about German being taught in German schools. And the pupils she interviewed who had gone through Welsh-medium schools didn’t seem to to have the slightest difficulty expressing themselves in English. In a nutshell, she’s gone into Wales with a preconception in her head, cherry-picked anecdotes from people to back that up, and completely missed the main story. We really expect better standards from the Rebel.

WE are dealing with the same crap here. Speak English in a french school? Then you will be writing LOTS of lines.

If the Welsh totally give up their control over their education system, they will all be learning Arabic soon enough. They should stay the course and keep command of their own culture and not allow any other influence to enter into their domain. If they allow changes in their education system they will end up the same as England and other countries. Learning about Islam and slowly being indoctrinated. We already have it here in Canada. Y DDRAIG GOCH FOREVER

Sounds like the Welsh are experiencing many of the same problems extant in Quebec after Pierre Trudeau’s Liberals forced bilingualism and Bill 101 on Canada…
Does Wales have language police yet?
And as far as homeschooling is concerned, why would you give your precious children up to the Marxists and predators at the robot factories, AKA the public school system(state-run schools) if you say you loved them!

The sentence should be " Something Wonderful is going on in British schools". Who in their right mind would send a child into one of those indoctrination centres ?

The real reason that people are pulling kids out of school is that they are being attacked by gangs of kids, the children of the Death Cult.
We can expect the same thing in Canada, before to long.
