Latino families in Virginia are suing their landlord because he requested documentation and threatened eviction due to illegal immigrants living on the premises.
According to The Daily Caller, the civil rights lawsuit claims it is illegal to ask for a social security number for residency.
The landlords are asking residents to provide either a social security card, passport or valid visa with documentation to renew their leases.
The lawyers representing the families say that asking for documentation is discriminatory and targets Latinos, but the landlords say they need documents to do proper criminal background checks.
“Even if the court ultimately decides the landlord has a right to do this, it’s equally clear the landlord doesn’t have to do this,” Simon Sandoval-Moshenberg, director of the LAJC, told The Washington Post.
